While playing with the tags I got to looking to see how other sites do it and I came across one that was actually pretty well done. They had a list of Genres which worked like categories ( Fantasy / Sci-fi ) and below that is list of themes (Group Sex / Blow Job) The themes worked like tags but where limited to the ones listed and would have to be entered when creating the story. The tag system is great for searching for stories but not that great at telling you about the story when there are dozens of tags in a story. You could dislike gay stories but the author filled it as a science fiction story with gay sub-plot so the reader would be instantly turned off to the when they reached that part of the story. Sure there is a tag their that says gay but it is buried in with the other ninety-nine tags. If we could make it so the author could select one Genre/category, really like the sound of the word genre, but have a certain number of themes so writers could have a science fiction story with lesbian and group sex themes. A reader could look at the themes and determine if it is the kind of story they like or not without having to scroll down through dozens of tags. Having only somewhere between one and three could also mean that it could possibly be displayed on the front page under the story text. Your Awesome Story by The Greatest Author Ever The short description which can not really describe the awesomeness of your story. Erotic Coupling | 69 Chapters Deep | 2 hours ago Redhead, Twins, Threesome Also unlike tags it could be limited to only predetermined Themes, either selectable like categories or auto-completing like links so a list of themes could be added in the search section for readers to find the stories. Of course this may all be impossible are really hard to do. I am not a programmer and don't want to receive a bomb in the mail from Friedman after he tracks down my IP address. The simple and easy way to do this would be going old school and just adding a few key themes to the end of your story description though a predetermined list would still be helpful for readers. That's about what I was talking about in the other tags discussions. One genre/setting and one or a few themes/fetish/sex acts. I think it would make it better than now.
I can see now why the bisexual category doesn't get much love. After searching for bisexual female most of what I saw was just the word Bisexual in the tags. No bisexual female or bisexual male though from the tags it seemed there was maybe two stories that didn't have gay themes but I wasn't about to go digging since you can't unread something once you read it. Apparently bisexual women or just straight women or lesbian but can't be both. I do give credit to the ghost who is writing "Wow, I think I'm Bi" since there isn't an author listed.
TAGS that should be. While looking up tags I thought of some things that should be tags but are not for some odd reason. Bisexual Males and females. Only two stories or labeled as bisexual males while none are labeled bisexual female and only one labeled bisexual woman. Totally different fan base for the two so good luck guys who want to read bisexual female stories. Teen Female & Teen Male- This is just a minor one but is worth a mention. Younger Male- You have older male, older female and and younger female but no younger male. Life Guard- Somehow no one has done a life guard story yet. Interracial- While races are listed there is no gender tags. No Asian female, Asian woman, black male, black man, Hispanic woman, Hispanic female, Indian Female, Indian Woman, Indian Man, Indian Male, White Male, White Man, White Woman, White Female. So if you looking for a certain interracial theme you have to pick a race and go from their. Transsexual on female, transsexual on male, Futa on female, futa on male, futanari on male, futanari on male. Again there is a separate fan base for those who like trans on males and trans on females. Nudity. Peephole, bath house, public bathing, outdoor bathing. These two themes are probably the two oldest forms of voyeurism. Only one story for group showers. No nude painting, or nude portrait and only one nude model. Telepathy. We have a whole section on mind control. and only one story tagged telepathy and no telepath tags. Any suggestions for mind control Nudity. Peephole, bath house, public bathing, outdoor bathing. Erotic Coupling. Apparently coupling means something different then I thought. : ) 24 stories with threesomes 12 stories with foursomes 12 stories with orgies 9 stories with gangbang
This has my support. Just cause it makes things easier to find and organize. And I'm always up for that.
I'd love a better categorization system, but I have fear that a huge list of agreed themes and genere won't solve problems. Presonally, I admit I'm very confused about the whole tagging system. I think that's because genre and themes have very blurred lines when talking about erotica. Let's take incest. It should be a genre, because it shapes the plot of the story, but ultimately it is a theme tag. That said, some authors use themes as plot elemets, so we have stories where you have only anal sex, only blowjobs, etc.. And besides, is there really the need to have such tags as "blowjobs"? I mean, if you think about it, what really gives you knowing ahead that will be "blowjob" in a particular story? Things like that, imho, flood the tag system...
I definitely go crazy tagging, myself. Personally though, when I check out tags, I end up just scanning less for what I want and more for what I don't want, lol! I do think I'd like the genre for a few reasons, or, perhaps, the ability to promote certain tags so they show in bold or near the top. As an example, one of mine shows Futa and Wrestler near the top and the rest collapsed... while there is a single futa wrestler character it kinda makes somebody think the whole story is a futa wrestling story if they just glance it!
The thing about Genre is that there are multiple categories of it. You have Genres based on setting (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Western, etc); you have genres based on the subject matter, theplot and/or the presentation (Mystery, Romance, Horror/Thriller, Erotica - yes, erotica is technically its own genre in and of itself, etc), Genres based on medium (comic books, Anime & Cartoons, Choose Your Own Adventure books, Video Games, etc) and then you have genres based on the targeted audience -- usually by age or sex (Children, Young Adult/Teen, Adult, Men, Women, etc). Genres are broad categories used to distinguish and separate books and stories based on their content... but there can easily be a lot of bleeding between genres. In fact, several popular mainstream stories can definitively fall beneath multiple genres. Since CHYOA is intended for an adult audience, and 95% of the stories will all count as erotica, I think it's fair to assume that all stories on this site fall under Erotica and Adult. That leaves the genres based around the setting, tone, and subject matter. I'd define the main CHYOA Genres as such: Action/Adventure Horror/Thriller Historical (fiction based loosely on actual history, or a fictional story based in the past of the real world) Mystery/Espionage (Detectives and Spy Thrillers included) Drama (School, Workplace, medical, and other forms of stories similar to "real-life" sitcoms) Fantasy (Magic, Urban Fantasy, stuff dealing with other worlds, etc) Sci-Fi (Futuristic stuff, Outer Space, Settings where science/pseudoscience plays a big role) Romance (Story where the main plot centers around the developing romantic relationship between two or more characters) Western (Wild West, cowboys, etc.) Cartoon/Anime* (Iffy, kinda hard to write about this so maybe a very niche category that could be tossed out or merged with another genre) Fan Fiction (Historical Fiction, Celebrities, established/existing franchises, etc) Pretty much everything ever written on CHYOA can fall into one or more of these categories.
I'm still convinced that genres categorization usefulness is mediocre at best. The more you generalize the category description, the more story would fit in and the less the tag would be meaningfull. Same holds true for the contrary. What purpose does it serve tough, other than a vague label? I could still like pretty much everything on that list, in due circumstances. It's mildly informative, I give you that, but I would greatly prefer an expanded synopsis under the title rather then a more complex or rigid tagging system. This tends to be the main utility of the tags. Hmm... I kind of hate tags, does it show?
Rather more than one, thus I'd prefer a system where you can combine categories of different kinds (e.g. setting) I think it should be possible to move them to the end by deleting the specific tag from all chapters. Then, as soon as the tags don't appear in the list anymore, you could add them again.
