The kingdom of Tarnia had several difficult years in a row. Droughts led to poor harvests, which led to lack of enough grain and wheat, prices of food rising, and people turning to banditry out of desperation. But through the efforts of King Darmir and his wife Queen Serenia the crisis was brought under control and eventually overcome. The droughts have ended, food is plentiful, and people are happy once more. But with one crisis over another looms on the horizon. There is a war raging to the north-east. So far it has not reached Tarnia's borders, but the King is worried regardless and has focused on fortifying the kingdom's north-east borders. Meanwhile the Queen has focused on expanding the kingdom. To the west of Tarnia there is a significant amount of unclaimed land that has been left alone for centuries – until now, that is. By order of Queen Serenia multiple settlements are to be founded in that area. And the first one shall be Marika – for now just a small village, but it is meant to become a large city - the capital of the new province. Once that is done the other settlements will be founded one by one. In time they will all provide food, lumber, and other resources, to better prepare the kingdom for future troubles, be it droughts, war, or something else. But founding a new settlement and growing it from a tiny village to a large city is no easy task. It comes with all sorts of danger – both external and internal... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've been thinking about trying my hand at a game, if there is enough interest. This will be a medieval fantasy game where you help the village of Marika grow. Or you can hinder its growth for your own benefit, if you prefer, though the village will eventually grow regardless of your actions. The characters are outsiders who arrive in the village some weeks after it has been established, so there are a limited number of people and buildings, at least a first. But even so there are quite a few jobs... The game will feature dice rolls to help determine the outcome of most actions. Questions? Opinions? Anyone interested?
I'm unsure. Less the premise, and more just personal reasons. I'm kind of on a break away from chyoa lately. On the other hand, lately, I still enjoy the mental distraction. What kind of culture is the country/setting exactly?
That's alright, we all need breaks from time to time. I haven't given much thought to the culture. One thing I know is that there are various races living in the kingdom, and half-breeds are accepted. In fact, the king's grandfather is a dwarf, while the queen has two elven ancestors: her grandfather on her mother's side, and her great grandmother on her father's side. So pretty much any character is possible. I wouldn't call it a city-building game, at least not the way I imagine it. You are playing adventurers that arrive in Marika for whatever reason. Though you can focus on helping the village grow into a town by doing jobs that help it. For example, helping the lumberjacks means the lumber camp can go back to full productivity, thus more wood for buildings, or for exporting to the rest of the country (and thus more money for the village). With some effort you could even become an advisor for the family that is in charge of the village and help with planing Marika's future development. Thank you both for the interest. I'll try to finish the area map and post some info later, so that everyone can have a better idea what you have to work with.
Almost anything is allowed, as long as you can justify it. So I wandering knight is fine. I have created an info thread that shows the starting map: The Founding of Marika - Info and NPCs
I would like to play, since I had long break from chyoa and now I want to return. It little remind me Pathfinder kingmaker, where player in the same time go adventure and rise his own kingdom. I'm in.
I would be also interested in joining. Maybe with a witch, a slaver, necromancer or a noble character... so many possibilities...
Thank you for your interest, everyone. I should have the charcter creation thread finished soon(ish).
Sure, you can have companions and/or followers, if it makes sense for your character - but you don't get to decide all of their skills, traits and flaws. You can use their backstory and personality to hint at some of their skills, traits and flaws, but at least some will be decided by me. I have added a section for followers and companions to the Character Sheet.
Are you by accident aiming at my character... Or is it on purpose? Besides shouldn't you add a flaw, to balance the points?
After they posted Arthuria with her disdain for criminals, three of the next four characters all have some kind of criminal background. "Whelp, if you're all going to be criminals and lawbreakers, then I'll reign you all in one by one. By force, if need be. "
It surprised me at first, but it makes sense when thinking about the sort of people who would want to get away from the more densely populated parts of the kingdom. Maybe I should have read the other characters before making mine, but at least we have different enough types of criminals with diverse motivations.
I didn't mind that. What I minded was the additional trait added to Arthuria later on: Increased Resistance to Magic Attacks and increases Damage Output on Necromancers and Undead. That seems to hit awfully close to Ida...
