Is there a website wide advertisement program going on right now? Every story page I've seen has an advertisement for candy.ai, ai sex chat, but I couldnt see anything about CHYOA newly partnering anywhere else on the website or in this forum. And if so, is there any way to change this setting? I'm here for the authors's stories, not ai writing
Hey Gameasy, Thank you for your post! Yes, Candy.AI has booked the text link for a week. We offer to disable all ads on CHYOA through SubscribeStar to support us: https://chyoa.com/subscribestar If you have any further questions, please let me know.
Hi @Friedman, I paid to disable ads through SubscribeStar -- and I also see ads, and not just candy.ai. There are buttons to [Remove Ads] ... but I'm already a SubscribeStar member. I disconnected and reconnected ... I synchronized my connection ... but no luck. The ads persist. Thanks for looking into this.
Ugh. Can't say that I'm thrilled with all the AI stuff all over chyoa lately, though I do understand that bills need to be paid. I do hope that our work isn't being provided to train AI though.
Heh, I wouldn't mind my work being used in training erotica writing AI if.. if it wasn't crap that will pollute the neural network and make it worse. Note that scrapping chyoa stories is really easy so if someone wants to do that they will not really need to ask for Friedman's permission or assistance even if taking it directly from the database may be a little more convenient.
That's very good to know, thank you, but not quite what I meant. I mean, for authors, is there a way to turn off the ad when the chapter is published? Literally every site I've ever read, the bottom of a piece of writing is used for author notes and commentary, and the placement of this ad very much makes it seem like the author's personal advertisement, not the website's. Which doesnt feel fair to the writers who have helped make this website what it is
Yeah, I dont mind ads in general, I'm actually very glad chyoa runs ads to help support itself, this style is just particularly egregious
I find the way the adverts sit inside the content really egregious. My (our) content is put up for free on this website at great personal expense. I understand the need to pay bills, but not if it dilutes the quality of our work. It's not like we're being compensated for our work. I don't mind the many many adverts, plus SubscribeStar revenue, or even the idea of even more adverts; I just really don't like them sitting inside our content without clear visual distinction. I understand and agree that operators of this website should have their expenses paid, and even their time compensated, but there are other ways.
Thanks for your feedback! This is a 1 week test. If the advertiser doesn't renew after a week, the ad will disappear again. But I take your feedback very seriously and have therefore moved the ad below the like bar. What do you think now?
Much better, still easily noticeable but seems like a part of the site, not the written content Thank you for responding so quickly, and being so willing to listen to feedback
Thanks for your feedback! Thanks for your support, zankoo! I really appreciate this! The ads are only hidden from the No ads tier.
I'm sorry to tell you, but it almost certainly is. Not by CHYOA or Friedman, but our work is routinely crawled by bots, just like any other text on the Internet, including ones that gather data for training AI.
Oh yeah, I know that. We can't do much to have it being taken from us, the least we can do is not to provide it willingly though. Perhaps a pointless distinction but an important one to me.
I am of the opinion that we actually have no right to reject people using our work in AI training. Because it is de facto the same as prohibiting a person to read our work and learn how to write (or how not to write) or be inspired by our work and write something loosely based on it. Copyright doesn't apply there. Authors never had FULL power over how their work is used, and neither they should. What is prohibited is to copy and act as if you are the author, profiting from the author's work as if you are the author. Transformed work is how humanity progresses. Why the fair use even exist? If I make a parody on someone's work I am not stealing because I am getting money not for selling the original work, I get money for my own effort - namely creating the parody and the fact that it would be impossible without the original work is of no importance. I am getting money for my own work. How creating an AI model is different? They don't sell our work. They sell theirs - AI that they created.
I am of the opinion that it is not de facto the same because the person is a person and the AI is not.
Just out of curiosity now that it's been brought up, @Friedman have you/do you/will you share work on chyoa to folks using it for AI training?
