Heavy topic, I know, but with the recent policies regarding forking over your ID/face/credit card in order to access the naughtier parts of the web, I think we readers and authors alike unfortunately are going to have consider migrating to other platforms, if push comes to shove. I know I'm not the only one who would severely hate to fork over either my face to feed an algorithim or my information to also feed an algorithim, and as much as I trust Freidman to not implement such a horrid thing, it's unlikely the poor guy will have a choice. This is advertised as an erotica site, and I wholeheartedly think Big Brother will treat it as such. Personally, I'm going to move to AO3. I already have an account under the same name as here, and it has enough non-sexual content it may very well fly under the radar to an extent. May any god that's out there help us all (also Blackout September 17th).
Use a VPN, it solved my problems and added an extra layer of safety for me that I'd already been considering for a while.
I have to admit it's an absurdity to have to either use a VPN or trust a random American company with either my data or my face in order to be able to access smut that I wrote
But yeah inasmuch as I write now, it's on AO3. This site had its time for me but Ofcom's meddling has made it even more impossible.
The infuriating thing about all this is it's about control, not protecting children. If you have say a five year old account on this site you are over 18 because even on the Internet time does not stand still. And adults using VPNs to circumvent having to prove their age is immaterial to protecting kids, my providing ID is not going to protect kids because I am well over 18. Well well over. If they want to keep kids off of adult sites the simplest way to do it is to control the account at the ISP level, that's what gives you access to the Internet to start with. All the rest of this stuff they are doing is about controlling what adults can see and do on the Internet, not kids. Of all the people on this thread I'm the only one who joined less than a year ago, and I RUN an adult site elsewhere. So I need to prove what again to Ofcom? and why?
I'm about to open an account and start writing on AO3. What's your opinion of it? Any tips you could give me about getting started would be great.
The worst part with this is what since centuries ago in most countries the secrecy of communications and private documents is constitutionally supposed to be inviolable without a court order. How is this digital ID bullshit compatible with those provisions? Also, the only way this can be enforced without countless websites getting out of business is with AI that oversees the uploaded documents. If AI is smart enough to tell if a document is credible or not, it should also be smart enough to generate a fake one that pases as a real one. If ID verification ever comes to my country, I wil definetely create fake IDs or faces, I'm not giving up my right of privacy under the bullshit excuse of 'protect the kids' because some idiot parents don't know how to use parent control software and want the gov to be their kids' nanny, while the latter takes the money from the AI and data collection companies so they can legally steal away our info and make a living out of it. If the kids get 'corrupted' by a device of domestic use bought and given to them by their own parents there is no one to blame but the latter.
Sorry, I am not caught up on the topic, anyone care to explain the treat to internet integrity that would force a site like CHYO to implement identety verifications? I've heard that there's been a back and forth for places like discord, especially in regard to 18+ severs and I think they also firmed up about CP, the former I had an impression was related to being featured on App store and Apple store. I've also heard that there's been a purge on 18+ games on steam allegedly because of Mastercard's conditions, but what are the specifics in relation to a site like CHYOA?
I can provide some additional tips beyond the advice about tags, but the tags are crucial. Disclaimer, I am unfamiliar with the experience of posting original worlds on AO3, within fandoms however choosing to post in English, and a large active fandom have a major influence on the traffic, and the biggest factor. In regards to advice that may also be relevant for original works: Deviant chalice, mentioned tags, this is the #1 biggest factor to get traffic. Chose your own adventure stile i NOT allowed by AO3 for some reason. My statement might need some verifying, you can check their terms of service or get reliable advice on the AO3 reddit. Tips on getting around this: Use collections: You as an author can create a collection which your story belongs to. Many use this as a means to tell other stories within the same universe, write spinoff's, Perspectives of other characters, or events that were not covered in the original story line for various reasons (ex. pacing). IF it's posted for a certain event, like Kinktober, or any other reason. Collections could be used to post other branches of the the same story. Multiple Author's can be added to a story and will gain the ability to create and edit chapters. This is only something I would recommend if you have an author you vibe well with, trust and have a working system going already. Post your story to an author's already existing collection. With the author's consent this is possible and may be an option to let other author's add another branch to your world. Gaining traffic: -tags, tags, tags, -Creating Collections for those with likeminded interests. These collections are usually put together by other readers and help bring traffic your way. My understanding is that people find the collection by seeing that the story they found (usually using tags) existed in a larger collection and click in to get more. It's not really polite to ask to have your story added to an existing collection (ask the AO3 reddit about etiquette when in doubt though), but it could be an idea, for you to create your own or go together with other CHYO authors, perhaps. - Participate in events. writing events like #kinktober usually get their own collection created, by writing something for the event it is possible to submit your work to that specific collection. These are the main challenges and suggestions I can think of now. But feel free to ask if you have any questions that pop up.
The UK passed a law requiring it. Technically written content is fine, but since CHYOA allows you to embed images, they've blocked UK users from seeing stories. Pretty absurd I have to use a VPN to read the stories I wrote but hey. Oh and AO3 doesn't disallow choose your own adventure-style stories. They're just a little harder to set up mechanically.
Goodness, you are write about CHYOA on AO3. Thanks for fact checking me idk where I got that from. I also got off my lazy ass and found this resource for getting around the mechanical limitations. Pushing the limits of what allowed on ao3 : r/AO3
Is there confirmation that this site will be blocked? I come here specifically for Interactive Fiction.
ALL sites are blocked in North Korea. They don't the public use the World Wide Web, they have an internal government web with nothing but the usual propaganda.
