I've read many a sex scene, some involving more detail as to the specific communication - words, moans, "God Yes", etc. happening and some quite short and absent any communication. How do you feel a good sex scene should be portrayed in this regard? How much dialogue? Is actually describing the moans and such a good idea or just silly?
I like some dialogue and I like moans. However, often I see sex scenes with a lot of dialogue or writers attempt to use onomatopoeia to describe the moans and it just gets out of hand. There's a delicate line between too much and your scenes becoming stale and it's a difficult line to walk. I feel like sex scenes that are too dialogue heavy are that way simply to add needless bloat to a chapter to make it seem longer. That is simply my opinion on the matter. There probably is logic to having longer sex scenes. This is a site where people go to get off and a sex scene that is too short won't accomplish much in that regard. There's also people who are into dirty talk both in stories and IRL. Personally, I prefer to keep things a bit more quiet on the dialogue part and simply describe what's happening in as accurate detail as possible. Occasionally I will throw in a line of dialogue or two to shake things up, but nothing too meaty.
I for my part like dialogues a lot. It makes the sex more lively in my opinion. In one my stories more than 50% of the text in sex scenes was dialogue and it seemed to be well received by the readers. It depends on the settings and story though.
I like moans, but don't need excessive dirty talk. It just should feel natural. Another problem with moans can be that there are not many synonyms or paraphrases, which could lead to frequent repetition.
I absolutely love moaning and dirty talk IRL and in fantasy. And I tend to write a lot of dialogue and moaning into my sex scenes but only to the point that I think they are accurately reflecting the scene I have in my head. And its challenging too because in my fantasy of the scene, there's actually a lot more moaning and repetition and when I'm mentally "watching" it that repetition is perfect. But there's really no way to translate that to writing because without the different tones, volume, cadence etc. when a character repeats the words "oh fuck" over and over you don't get the same variations.
This is just me but I really love when people talk during sex. Moans, screams, begging to get fucked harder or even romantic talk it's all good. Being loud in a wordless way is not bad either but it's the talking that really gets me turned on. But I do know that in writing it is repetitive if character A first tells B to suck his cock and take it deep in her mouth and then the text describes B doing just that so it may work better IRL or on video.
It depends on the scene that you are building and how descriptive you are. In some cases, entire sex scenes are build around dialogue, with no actual description of actions (it leaves much to your imagination). Personally I like it when there's a lot of descriptions. When you have majority of the scene described and the dialogue serves only to amplify some actions/events or to change the dynamics of the scene.
I'm a fan of moaning in my stories, both as a writer and reader. Maybe this is because of what I've experienced in my actual sex life by most of my partners have been fairly talkative, if often incoherent, while we have sex. Therefore including some limited dialogue feels more real.
I feel that dialogue use in a sex scene really depends on the characters involved, and their setting/circumstance, and the goal desired. It can work very well, or be forced. Dialogue can be great for character building during sex, humiliation scenes (whether sex is involved or not, as it puts out in the open and shares openly among individuals or a group what is or should be otherwise hidden - a key element in humiliation), raw dirty talk, realism (some people are talkers/moaners), can reinforce setting or circumstance elements, etc. Dialogue aside, emotional and physical descriptions are a must for my stories, personally, though I can get off on primarily setting descriptions and circumstance descriptions in other's stories, with few emotional or physical discriptions or dialogues. ... So anyway that's a few different erotic dynamics and approaches that can be used to construct an erotic scene. Dialogue Setting Circumstance or social setting Emotion Characters/relationships Physical actions Maybe there's something I'm forgetting, but offhand those are some of the major elements we have to work with when constructing an erotic scene, no single element necessarily being necessary.
I feel like a few lines of dialogue are needed usually, but mostly depends on the general setting and the POV of the scene. And if there is dialogue, consequentially there have to be a few moans in it. Also i feel arousing to describe the scene even through sounds, among the other details, so even if there's no actual dialogue, i like to make my characters moan and grunt every now and then. I'm generally against dirty talk. A bit of obscenity and incoherent talk, on the contrary are fine. A line of dialogue, even if just "God, fuck me!", helps break the possible monotony of series of 'he does' /'she does', that describing a longer sex scene could lead to use.
I'll generally throw in a moan or other noise here and there, but not excessively. The occasional "Mmm," or "Ohh," or "Ahh!" can help convey the experience, but it needs to be applied with restraint or it just gets silly. Something like "Ooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..." is just overkill, and I think such exclamations are better dealt with descriptively (A long, low moan escaped her lips...) Insofar as dirty talk, it really just depends on the characters and the situation. A scene with two innocent college roommates having their first lesbian experience would probably be more low-key in terms of purple language; on the other hand, a scene between some guy and a prostitute who hook up during his friend's bachelor party is probably going to have a little more "Fuck my cunt!" in it. I find that most of the sex scenes that I write in CHYOA involve characters who are hooking up with each other for the first time, so it's natural that the dialogue be about what they each want the other to do; they don't have the experience to already know what their partner wants. It also tends to be in short, choppy phrases because I want it to sound realistic; as a rule, people don't make eloquent speeches while they're playing Hide the Salami. Finally, since my stories tend to be written in the second person, it's the "NPC" who gets almost all the lines while sex is going on, because it feels weird putting words in peoples' mouths during a sex scene. With regular dialogue, it's not as much of an issue, but for sex I find it flows better if the "you" character just doesn't speak.
I am ALL IN on moaning and talking during the sex scenes. Especially if there is a taboo or something being broken, I really want to emphasize that point to the max. Just my personal taste though.
I'm against excessive overstating, things gets easily cheesy, taste like low budget porn. "I want you to put you big black cock in me." "Fuck, me, fuck me baby! Fuck your own mother!" "I gonna cum and get you pregnant with my child." This for me is overstating, easily a turn off.
