The guide doesn't make any reference to different styles of fonts or the ability to superscript. I'd like to suggest we include both abilities when writing for a story. One of my stories uses diary entries that I have to mark with underlines, and I contribute to stories with bilingual characters who are currently speaking their non-English language in bold text. I'd prefer using a different font style to designate non-English dialogue and non-oral dialogue exchanges, if only because of how limited my options become otherwise. I emphasize the fonts in particular because this is already a forum option. I acknowledge they are different systems, but it seems absurd that the forum should have more formatting features. As for the superscripting, even the forum lacks this feature. I also suspect I'm the only one who intends to include a mathematical equation or contemplates inserting a fake trademark into a thread body. However, I do have my reasons for these choices, and one includes an exponent. With the the current site functions, I can only hope to render it as "x^n" which isn't as aesthetically pleasing and likely is not as immediately obvious. A trademark, meanwhile, is completely outside my abilities. I also know this would necessitate the production of subscripting as well, I only focused on superscripting since it is my priority. Any community interest in either of these ideas?
More options are always good. Fonts in particular would be nice for highlighting or differentiating certain segments. I would worry a little about the readability if different stories and chapters had all of these different fonts, but that is something the writer would need to be aware of. Even a very small and limited list of these options would go a long way.
you could also style your text as inline code, which is red text on a very light grey background with fixed character width. You can see an example at the bottom of the Chapter Formatting guide. It is also possible to indent your text or to use sth like tables. You mean something like Code: Σ © ® ™ ª ⁰ ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ⁿ I copied them directly from one of my chapters. You just have to create them with a key sequence or copy them from another program like Word.
I have added keyboard symbols to the chapter formatting guide mentioned above by gene.sis. They can not be written in chapter editing/creation but can be copied and pasted from another.
Well, there are actually more characters which could be created with ALT and the numeric pad like ¹ ALT+0185 … ALT+0133 — ALT+0151 ¡ ALT+0161 ™ ALT+0409 These key sequences work on Windows OS only. Other OS could have other shortcuts. I'm also not sure what happens if a fallback font will be used instead of the primarily used one.
That may create more options, but it's still more limited and results in far more distracting text than the bold or underlined. Didn't work for me. That's my reason for adding superscripting to this topic. I copied my exponent directly from my word processor and pasted on both parts of the site, and both times it appeared as an ordinary number.
Does it work if you copy them from here? Have you tried the key sequences from my other post? (if you're writing on a Windows machine) Well, still not sure about other fonts. (btw two of the font families which are available at the forum are currently fallback fonts on the site)
I didn't try your samples until just now, and this along with confirmation copies uncovered the problem. My exponent was moved to a superscript location, but was resized to match the base. It was large enough to convince me superscripting also hadn't been applied. Still problematic, but this list will allow me to publish the chapter. Thanks.
