Do you ever write outside your interest?

Of course everyone writes about their own particular kinks, but have you ever tried to write a thread that is outside your interests? Since I am writing a mini text adventure with my new story I want to give the reader several options that cater to different interests. I am thinking of trying a few threads on subjects that don't interest me (e.x. monster tentacle stories), but will stay away from subjects that are a turn off (e.x. incest).

So, two questions for my fellow chyoo authors:

    1) Have you ever tried to write a thread that was centered around a theme that wasn't your particular cup of tea?

    2) What particular themes, or situations, do you find the most sexy?

As always, thank you for the input and the stories.

I have in fact tried to write stories outside my normal zones of interest, but not so far on this site: unless you count 'The Toy Shop' which, now that I think about it is not especially fantastic fap material for me since it is all about 'toys' and getting off solo, which reminds me too much of my IRL sex life.

    The Toy Shop

As for what I do find especially sexy, sweat and oils are a turn on, as well as women coming on to men, and as you yourself mentioned: tentacles are kinky and fun.

    Hope all that helps.

With me being heterosexual, I find writing gay fiction outside my comfort zone. However my story It's a mans world seems to have been well received...

Thanks for the reply. It would seem as a generalization, that most heterosexual guys would have a hard time writing male homosexual erotica. I know it wouldn't be my cup of tea. With my new story I do want to try writing some threads about themes I don't usually get into. For example, I'm working on a monster/tentacle thread.

This is going to be quite a full reply but you asked.

    1) Yes I do. Especially with Decameron XXX, I had to write such a variety of themes that I don't care for: apshyxia and a MMF scene which involved gay sex between men. Head Leaper involved a scat scene which I don't like at all between a damaged character and someone possessed by evil and the ending was horrible but true to the characters. I detest violence (outside consensual spanking) so that was tough to write but I am sure a lot of crime writers hate murder. I cannot stand fetish wear (but love genuine uniforms) and I'm sure I've written about that.

    2) I do enjoy the spanking of a woman but not to the point of marking, although not so keen on receiving, but I suppose my particular kink is watersports particularly watching a woman pee or squirt. And any scene with twins or similar looking relatives.

Content I don't enjoy is actually extremely difficult for me to write. I read a book recently that opened my eyes to one of the ways I construct a story, and the concept is peripherally relevant to this question. In this book the protagonist is literally living in a near perfect utopia. The protagonist does something incredibly stupid, though still within his character, and this sweeps him up in his entire adventure. When I read this book I suddenly realized that I have a very hard time letting my characters do what they would do, and subsequently putting them characters in uncomfortable situations. I experience things too vicariously, and as a result I become uncomfortable too. I can put them in situations pertaining to my interests, because it's not really difficult for me, but this mentality that I have makes it very difficult to write anything that I may consider uninteresting or distressing. Tentacles, for example, cause me vicarious frustration through my character, so it would be very difficult for me to do that.

I'm curious Beeble, about the story that you say you had to write. What was motivating you, or requiring you to write those scenes?

Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

You are a much more dedicated writer than I am. I greatly enjoy getting into a character's mind and setting, so if the story requires going some place that isn't my particular kink I will go there. There are some themes, however, that are such a turn off for me I simply won't go there.

It does raise the question, how much one writes for oneself and how much one writers for a general audience.

If you are referring to Decameron XXX this was a combination of things. The premise was the production of porn in a more liberal future Europe (you might be surprised that UK legislation makes it virtually impossible to produce porn in which a woman is seen to be enjoying herself, which as you can imagine has upset some of my female friends), using Boccaccio's stories. I rejected quite a few of the original stories because of horror elements which were a bit much for me (and this is not a horror site) but my main character was looking to shock and he describes the thinking behind the scenes and the reaction to the controversy. In the end I was left with 20+ stories to which had to be added, as well as some of the original scenes, a variety of scenes covering as wide an area of sexual practices as I could manage. One of the better stories did involve MMF and I felt it unfair for me to duck it. I guess my motivation was following a very controlled character's vision to the end.

On the other hand, Head Leaper was more of a spiral into darkness and I probably won't go down that path again.

I do plan my stories carefully, but I can stop writing for hours in order to check on whether this or that is possible or more usually is historically accurate. The additional research often leads to the story bulging inside itself. I think since I started writing on this site I am beginning to self-censor better and although I will leave stories open for people to write threads on male homosexuality (Cockshoot's Hall has several bi characters who are predominantly gay), I may not return to the subject again. That is purely because I find it hard to write not because I find it any way distasteful. It would be entirely wrong to refer to that as a kink unlike scat (how do people stand the smell?) or asphyxia (I have a breathing difficulty anyway) which are certainly not a turn on for me.

IMO getting into a character's mind is obviously necessary if you want to tell a good story. Of course many writers base characters on themselves so it's easy but my Ivor Bigun character is a long long way from me so I was surprised at the extent to which his voice was so clear. When I'm not writing, he's banished.

I have tried to write transformation fiction -- keyword "tried." It's the description of the transformation process that invariably makes me falter, as in I feel like I can't do it justice or, when I do, it dives into body horror without an erotic element. I'm a visual person, and so I imagine the action happening in my head, and so, well, just for starters -- the shifting of organs through the mensentaries, reshaping of skeletal structure, and the creation of brand new organ systems -- it has to be blindingly painful. This has been a limiting factor of me contributing to "X-Change" or, especially, "The Demonic Idol," as interesting as those stories can be. The latter seems to cloud any kind of pain the new demonspawn may experience with an equally powerful rush of pleasure, and maybe that the point in the end, but still, horns growing out of your head or the sudden growth of claws and muscle can't be pleasing neurologically. I know, I think about these things too much, it's a problem :)

The compromise I've struck is corruption fiction, which my erotophilia storyline in "At the Cabin" more-or-less falls under. Even still, it's a temporary effect, only active when chemical signals that spur it are active in the environment. "Cursed to Corrupt" is a good example of true corruption fiction done right in my opinion, and I do have a few ideas for submission, but I just haven't had the time to write it down. Physical transformations there are not as extravagant (though Marnie's bimbo-esque transformation skirts that line, though she feels her cheekbones being resculped, ouch) and more mental transformations take place. As the story progresses, that may change of course as Uhazral gain power, and by that time the story may be similar to "The Demonic Idol" or "The Lilith Strain," though with a low level of corruption anyway so the resulting transformative apocalypse might not be as jarring.

Long-denied loves sated in glorious nights of passion, curiosity of other partners, and orgies/group sex are my main ones. I've written incest before, but those themes tend to fall under my first category -- I don't think I've written an incest story for the sake of incest. Very sexually charged situations often reduce to orgies in my mind, and so fall under that. I actually enjoying writing the buildup more than the sex scene itself. Foreplay is incredibly hot :D

Same here. I have already seen what I'm about to write in vivid detail and I don't just mean the sex, I mean the town, the house, the room, the furniture, in full vibrant colour. Sadly not in 3D - I wonder if I could train my brain to do that. Can't do audio (that's only in dreams) or smells.

And again Beeble, that's why I thoroughly enjoyed pouring over your floorplans of Cockshoots Hall, it's exactly my cup of tea. I have an issue of 3D rendering in my head too, but depending on the situation, I do envision certain views. When I designed another cabin for "Tales of Silver Lake," I envisioned a sweeping balcony over the vestibule leading off to the bedrooms on the second floor, so I already had the view from the balcony over the vaulted living in my head. It's in 3D, but that's it. I can't mentally travel through the cabin. After I drew a quick and dirty floorplan, more things made sense to me, including the placement of the downstairs bathroom and the kitchen, but still, no mental real estate tours.

Allegedly, spatial reasoning can be fostered and enhanced, but I don't know of any reliable way of doing so. Those "brain games" haven't been proven to do much of anything in any arena of reasoning or thought processing, and it all really comes down to individual tutelage. There are broad categories of "learning" and people respond to them, but for any specific person, it's a crapshoot until you can assess them in a one-on-one environment. (Also allegedly, men are better at it than women, but the studies on that are very limited and I think it's a light case of neurosexism. Anyway.)

If someone asks me a mathematical question which requires spatial manipulation I find I am able to work it out in my head, but I am still surprised when I get the answer right. My brother however has no difficulty at all - he's a born engineer. I suppose we're off topic now.

First of all, thanks for mentioning the stories, I've looked them up and really like what I see. Second, while it may be difficult to write, I wouldn't worry too much about overly descriptive content being "body horror." I've read a lot of transformation fiction, done my share of transformation erp's, and played a few games in that genre. The meticulously detailed biologically centered descriptions are actually pretty common and well received, even if they're painful and cause the character torment to the point of unconsciousness. By my observation, the mentality behind loving transformation content is multifaceted but fundamentally stems from a change in psychological or social state manifested by the physical change of the character. When you describe the changes in meticulous detail, even if it's painful, then it helps to reassert in the mind of the reader the immanent reality of that change. Even if the change itself isn't erotic, the reader is much more invested in the subsequent experiences.

To answer the second question porneia made, transformations are my greatest love in erotic content. (If that weren't indicated in the previous paragraph.) There's something about it that makes it such a pleasure to dive into. It's like a wonderful (or terrible:D) emotional experience gift wrapped in eroticism. There is a sort of catharsis that comes with new beginnings, even if that beginning is quite horrible. There is the thrill of excitement that comes from the novel, and sometimes utterly foreign, experiences. Frequently there is a dynamic of dominance and submission communicated in a vivid clarity; that an individual has been ascended or condemned to a role that their new body necessitates. There's even the since of adventure and heroic tribulation if the character tries to resist the transformation. I'm a huge fan of the Arabian Night Gender Change Adventure on Writing.com, and my favorite story arcs are always the one's where he's left his mental acuity and is fighting for the ever decreasing chance to return to his normal body. There's so much potential and so much promise.

I think you'd be the brain to pick then! I largely agree with your in-universe psychological assessment, as most characters in TF fiction seem to be struggling to change, and so it eventually becomes a physical shift. Even in the cases when the transformation isn't planned, there is a lengthy discussion of an "inner true self." "The Beastmen Rising" (I think is the name, I can't remember exactly, and I can't check right now) talks about that greatly.

It's interesting, especially given your mention of gender transformation fiction, in that I think sometimes it can reflect a bit on the author. I've seen a large interest in gender transformation fiction among the trans community, and I casually follow a trans comic on Deviant Art called "Transchizophrenic," the author of which has done several gender transformation sequences as an outlet for herself. This isn't the only reason of course, and you have to take it in context, as some follow BDSM themes, domination, or simple curiosity. It's fascinating!

There are of course a number of AIF games which feature gender switch. I never feel comfortable with them - perhaps that is the writer's intention. I am perfectly prepared to play a female character, of any sexuality, or a male heterosexual one, but the transformation has me struggling because then the sexuality becomes confusing in itself leading to a second degree of separation.

I always try to write what the story demands of me, but there are stuff that turns me off sexually speaking, and then I have to see if I'm willing to write the scene in question.

For example, I don't enjoy BDSM, but an upcoming scene in my story requires it, so I'll probably write it because the theme doesn't turn me off completely. On the other hand, a couple of friends from outside CHYOA asked me to include gay male content on the story, but it does nothing for me sexually, so I won't be able to write it, although I respect the ones who like it and I would certainly approve a thread with this kind of content if another author submitted it.
