'I'll consider it,' Jack raised an eyebrow, 'If you ask me like that, yes, I can keep a secret, Adel. What is it?'

 

“Neutral doesn’t last long. We all think that at first. We’re special...but nah. My friend tried that and those fucks put him in the ground for asking too many questions. They’re more of a cult than we are...just...see what we’re all about if you’re gonna hear those guys out, alright?” Felica took a look at Alexandra, unable to mask her annoyance. “I can feel that even if my powers are shit. How are you so much stronger than me, if you just picked this up yesterday?”

 

Adel opened her mouth..then closed it. Then opened it again. And closed it. Uncertain of what she should say before just sighing. “Look...that friend she keeps bitching about...we never killed him....because he never died. We’re just supposed to make her think that.”

 

'Oh, ooooh,' Jack looked shocked, 'That's kind of cruel, y'know? But I won't tell her, I promised. Are you running a witness protection program? '

 

“Not exactly....we’re keeping her safe more than she thinks. A lot of the shit we do is complicated. It doesn’t ever get simple. The Union is on top...but everyone will hate you for working with us. But then...even if her entire brotherhood were to attack just the six of us? They still wouldn’t be able to take down a single one. Felica’s pretty much the only who even tries ‘cause they know they wont win.”

 

'Are there other factions? It can't just be one dominating one and one that doesn't even try at all,' Jack smiled at Adel, 'Why'd you send Abel away anyway? We're not exactly discussing stuff that he doesn't know anyway.'

 

“Hey, we’re allowed to see other people.” Laughing too hard at her own joke, she took a look at the glass of vodka in front of her, wondering if Jack would somehow interact with it from the looks of it. “Hundreds. But only a few worth caring about. And..nah, not like the Brotherhood doesn’t try. They’re just weak and too stupid to make a difference. The idea is they’ll find a way to beat the system without ever needing to kill or hurt anyone...but it doesn’t work. Some people really do gotta go. “Balancing death books” as Medius calls it.”

 

'So why doesn't Felica join another group? She seems to want to make a difference,' Jack said, 'At the very least avenging her friend against the two of you.'

 

"No clue. I'm not particularly strong though."

 

“Well, that’s the thing. We’d have her go with us...but it’s some dumb sense of loyalty. I dunno. Not like the rest are much better. The brotherhood happens to have the most members...it just happens that we’re freakishly strong even to other psychics...which is why we didn’t go all out, otherwise we’d have just killed everybody in the hospital. Normally, we don’t wanna kill a bunch of people so we keep it
....to I dunno...like a tenth? Fuck if I know math.”

 

'Don't you need to uphold some code so normal people don't find out?' Jack wondered, 'You might be really strong psychics, bug having the FBI crawling all over the place snooping around probably wouldn't help things much.'

 

“Strong enough they want to keep you around....or they want you around for something else. I don’t know. They always have their reasons.” Felica took another drag of the blunt, staring at Alexandra. “I can think of one.”

 

"And that is?" Alexandra inhales hers.

 

“Do we have rules? It’s more like common sense. You don’t want your house constantly raided by swat and army tactical teams. Really, you’d be surprised what you can get away with. Most choose to just not believe it. How long would it have taken you to even realize you could do the things you could on your own? Besides...if someone is becoming too much of a problem...that’s a unique situation....the factions deal with it together if someone is risking fucking everything up.”

 

'Okay, that seems reasonable,' Jack nodded, 'So... do you have a normal day job to pay the bills or is this Union business full-time and paid by the boss?'

 

“Well, you know. You..” Felica stops herself to enjoy the joint.

“Can find really good shit.” Laughing, her stress had melted away from being as entirely on edge, slumping against the wall and not being bothered by the grime of the alleyway.

 

“Our job? You’re looking at it.” Adel waved her hand at the bar counter with a small grin. “The bar isn’t a front or anything. The boss...huh, yeah. I guess he can pay you. I know he does with some of the other Union. Maybe we should ask about that. ” With the way her eyes had widened, she had obviously never even considered this before, but ultimately shook her head and dismissed it.

“Eh..nah, we only need expenses covered to stick with Medius. He’s good people.”

 

Alexandra laughs with her, smoking the last of her weed, and crushing the remains of the blunt underfoot. "Thanks, I used to know a guy." She neglects to mention that she didn't have enough money and had to suck off that "guy" to get the weed.

She pulls out a phone. "Let's trade phone numbers. If anything important comes up with our abilities or with the factions, we can contact each other. Or we can just smoke some more weed." She giggles.

 

“Yeah, wouldn’t mind doing this again.” Felica agreeing that it was a good idea, got her phone out, decorated by a protective case of a silver skull that almost looked like it was laughing at the both of them, but that may have just been the pot starting to set in.

“Don’t try holding out for better offers though...lot’s of people try grouping up out on their own, but we already have the most people. Yeah, the fire lesbo is crazy strong, but she’s still only one person.”

Felica’s face mixed back into a look hard to pin down, as the goth reminded herself of Adel’s harassment, unable to decide if it was serious or not. She still clearly hated both of them with a passion for their apparent crime, but Alexandra could sense even outside of the building, this only went one way.

Unlike when they were just carrying out a job before, it felt they actually liked the girl in their own way. Adel’s feelings were more unusual...but they didn’t feel like lust either. If anything, Felica’s seemed to suggest she was maybe just a slight bit hopeful it was. The same sense the teacher got when Abel had easily disarmed her personally...for as tough as she acted, there was a bit of machoististic side this punk girl had that she was trying to hide.

 

Alexandra smirks as they trade numbers, the revelation about Felica's masochism intriguing her. "I'll see you later, Felica. Good night, and don't try to kill them again, at least not yet. Guns are expensive, after all."

@unisol_gr44 Alexandra heads back inside the bar, taking a seat next to Jack. As she speaks, he can smell marijuana on her breath, something he would never have expected from her when he was her student. She was kind and open, but always seemed conservative and prim.

"So," she asks, "How've things been going here? Learn anything?"
