"She said something about opening the box meaning that you accept a deal, and it isn't worth the price."

 

'A deal? Hell,' Jack sighed, 'Oh great, now the crazy girl thinks we have some kind of arrangement because I opened her stupid box?'

 

She puts a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, it'll be okay. We won't let anything happen to you."

While they spend a few moments trying to make a proper explanation to Heather and reassure each other, the loud shout of “motherfucker!” and a rapid banging at the door, didn’t leave any guesses to who had showed up to join them.

 

Jack opened the door for Adel, 'Hey... welcome. Sorry for getting you involved in this mess.' He led her inside. 'Uhm, this is my sister, Heather. I think you know each other from the bar.'

"You opened th-" Adel moves in quickly ready to chew him out, but stopping at seeing the blond haired girl, her face aligned with surprise and recognition. "You're up in all this too? Well, of course. Why wouldn't you be?" Alexandra could read how fed up the assassin was getting with all these freak coincidences, but there was a sudden seriousness to her presence in a way different from before.

"Alright. First. The chick's name. Angela, right? If it is? Lie. Just lie. Lie to me and tell me it's someone else." This was the first time they actually saw a look a real concern on her face. This wasn't them dismissing it like, Felica. They were actually worried.

 

Jack looked a bit perplexed, 'What do you mean "of course she would be involved"? Heather doesn't have power-I mean, she was just home when the girl showed up.'
He showed Adel the open box, the two items inside and the note, grimacing as he lied, 'I didn't open the box and it wasn't brought here by a girl called Angela?'

 

She instantly threw her hands up. "Motherfuck-

She took a breath. "Okay. So, let's see what we got here." Her attention was caught to the items in the present, clearly she didn't know what to expect, but the "huh" sound at seeing the fluid container gave a hint she had an idea what it was for.

Stepping closer to the box, she picked up the cylinder. Just like when Jack touched it, the thing began to fizzle as Adel tilted it and looked at it. Adel gave a strained smile. Half amused, and looking even more annoyed. "So that's how the bitch..." Pieces of something were connecting in her head, but she wasn't giving any sign of looking too thrilled about it. Setting it down, she touched the jacket for a few seconds comparing the feel, before pacing back and staring down at it, snapping her fingers. A small spark of flame emitted from her finger tips and a pyre began to erupt on the cardboard, turning it brown and weak as it melted, but the jacket staying unharmed.

"What the fuck was that?" Heather had a lot of questions from the display, but Adel ignored them.

"Lyantiamine. How in the hell did she even get this? No way she just happened to get this on her own." Adel was lost debating a bigger picture, neglecting to explain any of her musings to the room around her.

 

Jack looked a bit baffled, whispering to Adel, 'What are you doing? My sister doesn't know about this stuff. You want to explain all this to her or something?'
He looked to Heather, 'Oh, uhm, it must've been a... static discharge maybe?'

 

The comment manages to catch her off guard, quirking an eyebrow at another bad lie from him. "What? Does she not know? She might actually be stronger than you are...well better powers anyway."

"Stronger? Better powers? Alright? Just what? How can this go into even making less sense than it already does?" Heather was only getting more and more bewildered, and Adel just stared with disbelief.

"Holy crap. They seriously did not prepare any of you guys at all. Well god..now I kinda feel bad about the whole attempted murder thing. We thought you all would actually be dangerous." She laughs for a few seconds, before it fades quickly.

"This bitch though...she is really bad news. Been number seven on the shit list for a long time. She's not that tough exactly. I can probably beat the shit out of her if I get close, but the problem is, we can't really. Her powers are..well, a lot like Alexandra's actually. She's an empath too, but much stronger. She feels everything that happens to someone in the whole city....it's seriously going to fuck with your head, when you have that much power. We know why she's like this...but doesn't change that she's still doing all this messed up shit....she's gotta go."

 

'Wait, Heather has?' Jack gawked, 'That's... for real? I mean you and your brother both have powers too but... she doesn't know does she?'

'Hey, Heather,' Jack looked at his sister, 'You don't have any strange psychic powers right? You would've told me if you did, right?'

'Well, I don't want to be this Angela's boyfriend and plaything or whatever she thinks I am,' Jack said, 'She wants to meet me at Summerside park later today, what do I do?'

 

"It's a difficult question. I have a gun, if you want it."

 

'Thanks,' Jack smiled, 'But I have one myself, I hope I won't need it.'

 

Adel glanced at both of them, looking a little bothered. “Yeah, tried that before. She senses emotions at such a level, she already knows that you’re not going to be there to just talk...that’s probably the deal with the jacket then. To shut things off for someone she “loves.” Wearing it might help fall under the radar a bit..but she still would have to be convinced to drop her guard. I can probably beat her in a actual fight..but for you...she might end up killing you anyway even if her other powers aren’t as strong as her empathy sense...it’s tough.” Adel looked back at the container again.

“I’m more worried that someone gave this stuff to her. That’s how she’s been so hard to pin down, but she couldn’t have made it on her own. It’s serious chemical lab shit to refine into proper material. Someone gave it to her because they wanted her around to kill more people....that’s definitely worse than we thought.”

 

'But if I show up wearing her jacket, she'll be convinced I have accepted her strange proposal or whatever game she's playing,' Jack said, 'Goddamnit, why did this have to happen?'

 

He gets out of bed dressing himself and heads out to find out more information of what all occurred. He couldn’t just treat his next couple days off as lazy days he needs answers ASAP. Where should he go his thoughts linger to that proverbial question?

"Because you opened the box." Adel shuts her eyes for a quarter second, trying to think on it more.

"Just trying to set on her fire, won't work. She has enough that shit to keep herself safe...but it's not perfect. It does fuck with our powers, but it's not as if it stops bullets or knives. A gun might work if you can get in range to use it...still, it's not as if that stuff completely stops everything from working. It repels the forces of energy from working, but it doesn't prevent physical objects from appearing....there might be something to do there...trying to cut her off as a group is a bad idea. She'll definitely know something's wrong."

 

'Something tells me she wouldn't just give up if I hadn't opened it,' Jack sighed, 'I don't know, I don't want to go there and just shoot her in the face in broad daylight. I'm not some Mafia hitman. I'm not sure how my powers would help either.'

 

With his day free, it’s up to him what he wants to do. While he can read minds, it doesn’t help point him into the right direction of anything strange to investigate. He recalls the card that the detective had handed him for later and the supposed idea of an all knowing computer entity that was curious what he was up to. Either one might be a place to start...or it’s entirely possible he could just go and do whatever he felt like.

 

He decides to head home and look to settle a little. Arriving home he makes some coffee for himself and then turns to the internet to understand his new abilities and see what the news has to say about the episode at the hospital. He texts Laya to see what she is up to. He is now in his comfort zone. He needs to formulate a plan before moving forward.
