So with two misses from majus on a new RPG, I figured I should throw my hat into the ring. That way, even if I do come up with a good idea I can start it and abandon it for two months after Work consumes my life so that I can feel like garbage about it again. (Starting to think I'm a masochist and yes I'm still profoundly disappointed that work pulled me away from that.) anyway....to the task at hand... I've been playing a lot of Magicami lately. It's an NSFW Nutaku game(well, it was out in Japan before Nutaku picked it up, but we can call it that for now) involving a group of Magical Girls fighting against very rapey demons. I'll be honest, I've never thought that I'd be one to get into some kind of "Magical Girl" game, but i've enjoyed the kind of "double-life adventures" where on one hand, these people are perfectly normal High School girls and on the other hand, they're fighting the forces of evil where they could easily die or face a threat worse than death. so I've been thinking of some way to maybe find some way to turn it into a lewd RPG. Maybe not necessarily Magical Girls...Although that is an option. They all have their own inspirations which have influenced my thought process. 1.) Magical Girls. Obviously, Magicami is a big inspiration here. Players would create a Magical Girl with their own powers that they would have while transformed and be fighting monsters that were actively having an influence on their world. However, outside of their transformed state, they are rather unthreatening to said monsters. 2.) Inside The Game Inspired by things like .hack, Sword Art Online, or Code Lyoko. Ok, one of those things is not like the other, but the themes are similar. Players create a "PC" that they use within a virtual setup where the enemies are much more malignant and dangerous than they seem and seemingly some things on the outside want to get out or influence the outside world in some way. 3.) Just Straight Up World Hopping. Narnia. The players find some kind of dimension doorway to a very different, fantasy world. In one, they're heroic adventurers that go on adventure-y stuff, and on the other, they're rather average High School Students. However, this is probably about as separated of the "double life" ideas that I have and time may pass differently between the two worlds. Anyway, I originally had a lot more in mind for this post, but it's currently 1 AM and I work tomorrow, so I'm going to bed. I got the rough idea of the three ideas out, I guess I'll see if there are any bites. Also, I need more players in my club in Magicami, so....
I actually think I could think of a thing to do for those. Not super into the Magical Girl or Idol craze in anime, but I might be to work something out. Obviously they'd be more adult for a story here too....I just find them....too loli and sexualized anyway in anime at large and it puts me off from them. But since characters would be adults for our stories ,it'd probably work out. Sword Art Online....I never honestly liked all that much, but it makes me think of Game Monster in the sense of a lewd rpg, and that is one of my favorite stories on the site sooo(which one of these days I should get around to updating my contributions.) Third one, I probably could do a thing for, but less sure what I'd really have to work with if we're doing pure humans. (Unless something like they awaken to their more fantastic blood in other realms. I dunno.)
I've never heard of the stuff this concept is based off of, but the premise sounds interesting. I could probably make a character for it, too. Like Auracide said, no loli, though.
Never played Magicami - I took a look during prereg, did not like the art I saw, and ignored the game. BUt I do like the idea of a double life. Of the three ideas posted I like the first two, and the third one a bit less.
If you take a look at something like say....Sailor Moon. It's definitely possible to make something Magical Girl that doesn't focus a lot on the Idol Culture or Loli Cultire. it's just that Japan tends to do as Japan does... While I don't mind Barely Legal Teen Content. It's to be very clear that everyone is 18+ and should be described as such. This is probably the way that It would go. I wouldn't mind in either option 2 or 3 of you being human in the normal world, but turning into some kind of orc warlord or Dragonborn sorceress(even if you were a man).
That is the complicated thing when there are multiple options. We have one who prefers 1 and 2, one who can do whichever, and one who prefers 3.
This could be fun if, yeah, it stuck to more Sailor Moon-style magical girls than Madoka ones. And even then you'd have a potential for a range of tones from the goofy Venus 5 and Magical Girl Sae, to the (somewhat) more serious Twin Angels or Magical Kanan. I do like this one too because it would depend on what the deal is with the other world. Like, I love Rayearth and a... "spiced up" version of something like that could be fun.
They all have their own Pro's and Cons. They also have their own similar challenges. Essentially I'll be running parallel stories with each. One is more of a Slice of Life story which may or may not be influenced by what's happening in the more empowered story. So from that perspective, the easiest stories to do would be 2 or 3. #3 is largely completely separate storylines and the only crossover would be the changes in attitudes and opinions that the players have, or maybe one would prefer their life in the other world and spend more time there vs the other players). Story 2 would also have largely separate stories outside of maybe Players meeting other Players from the game in real life and maybe some Ă̴̲̰̩͚̱͎̙̘̈̾͐͐Į̴̼̗̞̙̝̣͓̋̔̿͗̓̀̋̇͗̾͗́͠͝ ̴̡̧̡̼̖͖̲͙̤̪̹̹̒̔̈́̅͑S̷̡͚̬͉͕̹͚̗̬̭͈͋͛͌͜h̷̨͔̞͖̭͂̊͐ȩ̶̜̗̩̙̣͙̮̯̹̣̼̩̓̋̃̒̇͛̑̑̍͜͝ͅn̴̨̛̖͙̖̩̟͖͉̥̻̬̗̺̬̐͐͒̔̋͗̓̿̋̔̕n̵̼̜͙̬̫̖̖̜̞̍̇͑̈̅͑̅̅͐̋͜͝ą̷̨̱̤̥͖̰̖̝͚̺̱̈̂͛̈́̍̌̎͗͒̒n̵̛̥̈́̌̎͌́̎̎͒i̶̧̧͍͇̜̩̱̖͇̐̈́̌̀̏̏̈́̀̐͑̒̎͘͝g̴͈͖̗͚̜̟̯͈̺̱̱͆̽̀̈̀ą̴̫͓͓̌̅͆͂̇̓̈́̿̚n̸̛͔̟̗̟̭̬̱͈͓͎̯̹̣͗̋͋̀̋̈́́̉̔̚̚͜s̷̡̛̹̖̩̰̘̞̹̳̲͓̜̓̈͌͒͊̿... I do worry about Story 1's(magical girls) staying power. I mean, compared to the others which will have more fantastical options initially. You're ladies with magic powers, but still largely human women(although i guess you could have a power that transforms you into something else later). However, unlike the others which would have two separate stories, Story 1 would probably for the most part have one, because the two worlds are all intermingled. i'll be honest, i'm not familiar with Rayearth.
You could have some fun setting up "missions" where the team has to stop however the enemies are trying to corrupt or alter the world, which could lead to some fantastical scenarios depending on how overt or subtle their alterations are. Maybe have it a thing where even if the girls defeat the particular monster, not everything it changes reverts to normal so you have a changing paradigm as the otherworldly slowly but surely encroaches on their normal lives more and more. (And admittedly, those kind of things are more overtly what I associate with the Magical Girls As Superheroes sub-genre.) Magic Knights Rayearth is one of CLAMP Studio's earliest hits (they're the artists who also created Card Captor Sakura and did the character designs for Code Geass). It's about three girls who get taken to another world and gain magical powers and giant robots to fulfill an ancient prophecy of stopping an evil threat that's causing said other world to slowly fall apart. It's pretty good, though the manga and anime adaptations diverge a LOT (ESPECIALLY during the second season) but I'm not sure if any streaming service has it so you might need to hunt down rips of the old DVDs or scans of the manga if you're curious. And set-up 3 seems to be something where you could do a group of girls trapped in another world who have to complete a quest to go home, slowly gain powers as they do tasks as part of that quest and have to fight off the monsters/evil generals who want their way with them either to halt their quest or use them for their own ends. And that just seems like you could get some fun times out of. So TL;DR, I'd prefer Scenario 1 as that feels the most Magical Girl-y to me but I'd be more than fine with 3 if more people want that and I'm not really feeling the VR Game setting of 2.
I can probably work with any, but if it's between the first, or third, I feel like 3 probably could give more to work with than the first. 2 still isn't an awful idea to me.
Harsh, but true But that is also due to my mistakes - I should gave more description of what I was planning. Magical girls - I read once a notion, that in Sailor Moon, the Moon kingdom was actually a tyrannical dynasty attacking and enslaving the entire solar system and the magical warriors were brainwashed. Inside the game, looks fun. Just what kind of a game are we talking about? Strategy, fantasy, horror, sci-fi, MMO? And if actions inside the game have consequences outside? The third idea also looks interesting... it would include a fantasy world, yes?
I didn't mean to be harsh. Not every idea can have enough players latching onto them. It would be an MMO...Although theoretically something like a Mutliplayer Strategy game could be interesting as well. the original intention/plan was MMO. As for whether actions inside the game would have consequences....W̶̛͉̦̞̼̼̙̳̮̞̝̖͎̼̲̤͒́̃̇͊̑̅͐̂̀̇̓͗̽̍̆̊̍͂͆̑̐̈͆͗͛̌̈́͋̌͊̋̀̾̒̽̐̚̕̚͘͝͝͝͝͝ḫ̶̢̡̢̛̛̺̻̼̣̺̭̥̣̲̫͎̘̤̯͎̲͕̝͖͙͎͔̥̥̫̼͎͉̣̹̰͔͈̽̈́̂̓̏̒̉̂̉̔͗̇̉͐̆̌̽̉̅͌̐̍̃͂̃̇͊̿̍̋̎͘̕̚̕͝͝ȏ̸̩͉̲̲̘̮̥̏ͅ ̸̡̫̬̲̮͈̤̘͍̻̩̳̯̙̜̫̞̱̣͕̣̻͖̼͔̠͈̥͌͛͑̓̈́́͂̎̒͆̌͑͊̔͊́̓̍̄̒̎̓͛͐̀̕͘͜͝͠ͅͅͅḳ̷̡̨̛̭̥̫͇̘͎̮͓͎̣̙͕̯̩̎͋̄́̎̿̾͐͆̽̃͗̋̏́̇́̃̃̑̉̔͗̋̓͐͐̄̒̽̔̓̌̂̌̃̆͐̆͊͋̿͂̂̀̚͜ͅͅn̴̢̡̢̼͍̤̭̱̙̯̩͍̩̙̝̱͈̫̟͚͍̗͑͒̒͌̉̈́̄͗̎͂͌̚͘͜͝ͅǫ̷̨̞͙̻͇̜͙̘̺̤̖̺̻̘̭̥͉͍͈͎̥̯̘̯̮̭͚̲̬̅̊̅̀̌w̸̨̢̛̭͓̦̟͕̤͖͙̙̪͛̃̃̕̕ş̵̛̭̯̞̬̭̩͉̥͎̣͍̦͉̣̠̭̮̹͔̫̠̼̰̥̪̞̉̏̆̊̋͋̐̒͗̉̅̄̌̈̌̊̌͊̓́̔̉̊̑̍̽̕͘͘̚͠͠͝ͅ?̷̡̨̹̹̟̦̪̟͕̠̠̣͓̦͕̜̗͉̱̥̼̞͈̮͊̊͒̉̈̚ͅ Yep, fantasy world is the plan.
Well at this point, I'd say just go with whatever feels right. Don't think about it. Just do what your instincts say to do.
The big thing to keep in mind is that doing one game doesn't necessarily mean that the other two are off the table for the future. i think for this run, we'll going to be going for Option 3. "The players find some kind of dimension doorway to a very different, fantasy world. In one, they're heroic adventurers that go on adventure-y stuff, and on the other, they're rather average High School Students and time may pass differently between the two worlds." I was debating what system to use. Whether something more traditional RPG-y with or the same system I used for Convergence. I think Convergence would be better used for the Magical Girl one and the other two would be more standard. I'll have the character creation thread set up rather directly.
