What turns you off in a story?

As in, what fetishes would make you want to stop reading a story? Alternatively, what tropes or other writing issues stop you from finishing one?

Is this a touchy subject? I'm mostly curious.

 

It's difficult to be objective about this stuff. Kinks are kinks, they are weird by definition. Generally speaking, most people will accept only the kink they like and shun pretty much everything else

 

In that case, I hope people are comfortable enough to be honest but mature enough to avoid starting a war.

Excluding things that aren't allowed on the site anyway, I guess ballbusting is the one thing that just makes my dick shrivel up and die. I'm getting phantom pain every time I read about it.(Which incidentally doesn't stop me from including it in one of my stories because im just quirky like that)

Beyond that you have to come up with some really fringe shit like GILF and Snuff porn to turn me off.

The biggest thing would have to be bad characterisation. When a character does something too far removed from actual human behaviour without explanation, I cannot continue to enjoy the story. Everything that happens as a consequence of that character's action is simply unbelievable. It seems to quite often be an excuse to make characters have sex when the author doesn't want to write the transition or buildup to make it seem natural. There's probably a joke to be made here about writers and porn and not knowing how people act in real life...

Promising readers what they want only for it to be a bait and switch, politics, Mary Sue characters especially those that are established as being "better" than pre-established beloved characters, making drastic changes to characters that are not in line with their personality, skills or backstory, badly used retcons, representing personal opinions/feelings as irrefutable facts, the idea that art cannot be objectively assessed of quality, straw man arguments and needing other people to come up with theories or excuses to make the story make sense.

No, prominent child characters. It feels so weird I aged all the child characters in Persona.

Damn, I've got a little bit of it in mine. Would it make you feel better if I told you one of the guys abused and raped his students and the girl who ballbusted the other one got spanked as punishment and had to kiss his balls better?

I don't mind ballbusting if it serves a narrative purpose. My issue comes when the focus is on it with the intent to arouse me.

I am not a fan of celebrity stories where they don't bother to develop her as a character. If it's Catwoman or something, I already know who she is so some of your work is done. I do not know Dua Lipa and just telling me its her doesn't do it for me.

Have you read Gina and Marcie's review on Darklord? That story had cuntbusting as a comedic device and the reactions pretty much mirror my own.

 

Scat is not something I find sexy; violent sexual assault doesn't shift my gears either. Maybe it's just me growing older but rape in general is just something that often feels edgelord-y to me a lot of the time; I get folks have a kink for power fantasies, but a good depiction would be...traumatic.

On the other spectrum of things: really brief and poorly described sex scenes. "She ate her pussy and it was super hot." and all that. Just...put some effort into it. Relax. Think it through.

I should say abrupt changes in tone, but I'm probably guilty of that.
