Well, all of the maidens are still ultimately competing to become Queen. With that said, any of them involved in the meeting with the Dark Elves or the Fiona situation may see it as an opportunity to eliminate one of their rivals. An argument that giving up Arin may prevent all out war with the Dark Elves, or that perhaps the people of the Goldfields have some very valid concerns about Fiona. It could be utilized to (for lack of a better word) weed out some of the potential suitors and make the next group of decisions a bit easier to write. Also I was wondering if you could write up the differences between the elf-types for the Writer Resource Page sometime when you get some spare time. That thing is probably pretty out of date at this point...
That's something I can consider, when I have the time to spare, and I'm not having a bout w/ Writer's Block.
While I hope you get Dearnise gets his mojo back, I would like to share my ideas on the extensive family ofAl-Nonoon, any feedback, criticism, additional ideas are welcome. First I'll introduce members of the Grand Sultans harem/concubines and then their children, to get the general family dynamic. First of is among the first generation of girls that serve the Grand Sultan Haggar, one of the most beautiful despite being among the eldest even older. She was daughter to a merchant who set off to become a dancer where she watched and learned the ways of power and politics in palace and took full advantage of it for her own gain. After becoming one of the favorite women of the Grand Sultan she was chosen to bear his heir, since at the time He and the Queen have been having difficulties having children. Little did they know that Haggar herself was the one responsible for the Queens bareness, with manipulation and having the Queen to take doses of a potion to prevent her from having children so that she could put her own child on the throne. She nearly succeeded, after her son was born and still no Child from Ivira to contest his claim to the throne, until it was all foiled by another younger servant girl who's studies allowed her to seek out the answers needed to help her Master and Mistress. Thus the true heir Ali Al-Nonoon, the rightful ruler was born. Haggar was furious as well as disheartened, all her carefully laid plans and sacrifices to get where she is seems all for nothing. Fast forward to later, her Son Ishmalis grew tired of playing second fiddle of his younger brother and set of to start a revolution, despite her mothers protest, as her current position in the Grand Sultans court and graces still remained intacted and she couldn't risk losing it by siding with her son, no matter how much she wanted to. At this point she is torn between helping her son take over the empire or on the other hand look to increase her station by gaining favor of Ali the heir apparent, the actions and inaction of Ali will determine which. At least that is what I'm hoping towards Her son Ishmalis is for intents and purposes a rival to Ali, two sides of the same coin so to speak. Ishmalis has his own sense of charm and leadership accept his kind involves in appealing to others ambitions and greed. He has a great love of war and conquest and is proficient in combat and strategy, a bit more direct and confrontational then Ali who likes to think on his feet and trick his opponents up. His overall goals is to take over the whole empire as the new Grand Sultan as his self-appointed destiny and is willing to make any deal and any price to achieve this goal, even making questionable alliances such as other enemies of Ali such as Shera Khan, or even the Demons. Next we have Magara, a black panther type Cat Woman. She was once friends with Shera Kahn, being the daughter of the tribal shaman and Shera the daughter of the chief, Magara was a scholar who studied every piece of parchment and learned every lesson that was told to her. The tribe was attacked and Magara was captured and sold into slavery, as luck would have it her knowledge became useful to those who were ignorant of medicine, languages, and law which has allowed her to get the better of her more abusive masters while profiting those who see her value. Eventually her talents were taken notice of the Royal Library and realized her talents were wasted on singular masters when they could benefit the whole empire. So she ended up as royal tutor among other things at the palace where she tutored Omari Al-Nanoon and his would be Queen among many other students in the empire. Wishing to solve the plight of her friends and students Ivira and Omari Al-Nanoon who have desparatley been trying to have children worked as hard as she could to find a remedy and she did. In undying gratitude, Ivira personally asked her to join her and husband together as a family. Though a bit reluctant she eventually agreed and has since done her best as royal teacher to all the children born of the Grand Sultan, even her own. her daughter Mirahj, even when she was young she had a gift for magic, even when she graduated from the Shaharazade academy she has become one of the most proficient sorceress second only to the Queen. However with such great power, she had a burning ambition and curiosity to learn more and more, and her interest so far have lead her to studies of the old pantheon that her mothers tribe worshiped along with some of the more Darker and forbidden magics like demon summing and necromancy. While her mother is quiet proud of her achievements and potential, she worries that she'll step upon a path their's know return from. Another possible ally or enemy and/or lover depending of the choices made. Cerise, a canine beast woman was originally one among a litter of pups that comes from a long line of well bred slave hounds/pets. Her mother was bred by the finest Canine servant in possession of the Grand Sultan of old, who then gave her to his son Omari as his personal pet, who would serve as his companion and protector and companion throughout most of their lives. They became inseparable, saving each others lives on several occasions, Cerise would protect him from any perceived threat from enemy combatants, to opportunistic woman. Every woman that would share her lords bed, she would test out first to see if they were worthy and insure their not assassins. Her only failure in this task was Haggar whom had no intention of any ill will and bested the beast woman in the bed. Omari was so close and caring towards her and all she did for him that he enlisted Magara to educate her however she can, so far she was been able to speak competent english and Al-Nasheban, but has little concept for expression or irony. Against any naysayer, Omari officially decreed she be one of his woman, which she happily agreed to share his bed as it is a large leap away from sleeping on the floor. Of the children she bore him two of them are the most well know, Jaina and Able who exhibit one of two prominant aspects shared by thier mother. Jaina as Hound Hunter and tracker, sleek, cunning , yet aggressive. She takes great pride for every big game, or bountiful kill she makes for her families honor and the feastful pleasures of the empire. Abel on the other hand is more a gentle protector and would only act aggressive if he or his pack were put in danger, and in his mind that everyone in the family (though he is a bit conflicted about Ishmal) and has since been Royal Bodygaurd, willing to give his own life to protect his pack with pride and honor, though he may be gentle he can fall prey to his baser instinct which may impair his judgment unlike his sister who just gives in to them. Still have more, but let me know what you think so far.
Writers Block + My dayjob + Real world schedule = Never a good thing, when trying to get back to writing something on Chyoa, but I'm doing my best to find time to write. @Ultrasound7 your ideas look very solid to me, and the dynamics of the power plays involved could lead to some very interesting storylines. From what you've written, I would most certainly put Khalisah on the bloodlines of the Grand Sultan & Queen Ivira. I'm still trying to work out the details of Khalisah herself that could make her stand out compared to the other four maidens. I have gotten started on drafting out the next step in the Arin Personal Crisis scene, as well as a possible pathway for Duchess Irene, but I have yet to get around to completing them.
I've just recently started reading the Ali chapters, I think this information is all quite helpful and you might want to create a separate 1-chapter branch just for such an infodump. The only thing I can think to add is that it seems like the situation of the descendants of different harem members competing for the throne seems like it would be a regular occurrence. I've been a low level follower of various threads on this for a while and am considering starting something in it. Probably a lower level ruler in one of the less-used regions of Itheria at first. I'll post a more detailed concept here in the next day or so before trying to add any actual chapters.
Not sure if it goes against the spirit of the story but to keep things manageable I was going to start a storyline focusing on a smaller territory held by a vassal of the main Kingdom, to keep in proximity with the main story but still give me my own little canvas to get weird with. Here's my proposed chapter start: Countess Zoe Orban of the County of Undrek Located in the eastern half of the Frostpeak Mountains, the county of Undrek - mostly tribal wilderness except for the town of Undrek itself - is one of several "black sheep" regions of the Itheria, notorious for either toeing the line or outright ignoring the laws and traditions of most of the kingdom. In theory, the Orban family that currently rules Undrek are vassals of the reigning Duke von Doom, but the inhabitants of Undrek consider themselves to be more sophisticated than most of their southern brethren and have grown increasingly brazen in their refusals to assist against goblin raids or other threats. In sharp contrast to the warrior ethos associated with most of the southern lands of Itheria, the jaded people of Undrek openly scorn the arts of war, considering themselves sophisticates despite not being particularly wealthy or influential compared to other parts of the kingdom. This is not to say that Undrek is pacifist or benevolent in any way, shape or form; they simply prefer mercenaries, privateers and brigands to do dirty work on their behalf rather than raising their own companies of men-at-arms. Undrek has some very unusual customs... some of which are very unpopular in other parts of the kingdom, and others that gain them wealth and favors. Many of the peculiarities of Undrek have to do with the considerable goblin population. Unlike in most human lands, goblins are accepted and even somewhat 'civilized', wearing woven garments and using metal tools and weapons. But the integration is far from perfect: the smaller humanoids are still second-class citizens (alongside the few beastmen that dwell there), and have no legal protections. Many of the goblin tribes that frequent Undrek lands are nomadic, using it as a stopover and hideout in between raids on human settlements in the north; the rulers of Undrek have historically turned a blind eye to, and even encouraged this. As if this were not enough, Undrek has always maintained an ethic of tolerance for any and all forms of magic, even the most dangerous and immoral ones. In particular, the township of Undrek is strongly associated with necromancy, with grotesque reanimated skeletons shuffling through streets openly and undead slaves being sold as laborers alongside other wares in the market. Other goods that are illegal in most of Itheria, such as poisons, can also be found there. Titillating tales in taverns across the southern lands talk of Undrek as being "The city of witches and whores", but of course, the main source of income is more mundane - the smelting of ore produced by the rest of the Frostpeaks for sale to blacksmiths in the Crownlands. In return, the county is unusually reliant on imported food. More than tolerance of banditry and sorcery, though, the practices of of Undrek that both disturb and intrigue nobles from other Duchies the most are those to do with sex. The County of Undrek has always been ruled by a Countess by tradition, making it among the only parts of Itheria with a tradition of matriarchy - though this is a de-facto state of affairs and founded on flouting and circumventing the inheritance laws rather than challenging them directly. Although both men and women alike assert the superiority of female leadership, they also scorn the Amazons who sometimes visit Itheria from across the sea and often take offense at being compared to them. In order to flout the male-preferring marriage and inheritance laws of Itheria, the ruling ladies of Undrek (currently the Orban dynasty, having ruled for only three generations after the last rulers fell prey to an intrigue) traditionally refuse to marry, thereby preventing Undrek from coming under male rulership by marriage. Any males born to the line are 'gifted' to the King's Own with the understanding that the King or Queen of Itheria will never support their claim to rulership of the county. The few of these soldiering bastards that have persisted in raising the issue have met with 'unfortunate accidents' at the hands of their sisters. These ascendant rulers are sometimes not even related to the previous countess by birth, part and parcel of their dynasty's brazen disregard for the purity of their bloodline. On several occasions, reigning Kings of Itheria have taken advantage of this state of affairs by purposefully siring a 'backup heir' or two who can be invited up to the crownlands and legitimized if there are no more suitable candidates to carry forth a dynasty. There is a flip side to this rebellious disregard for tradition, however, that makes many rulers fond of having the County of Undrek as one of their vassals. For as long as any could remember Undrek (the region as a whole but, in particular, the city of that name) has maintained the law of "prostration"; to whit, any monarch of Itheria, anyone bearing said monarch's seal, or any of said monarch's direct vassals (Dukes, mostly, but also a few other nobles who are directly associated with the royal house) has certain rights in Undrek... the right to sexually make use of any adult inhabitant of the county. Aside from those under 18 years and the infirm, no one is above this law, not even the countesses. Although this astounding bit of latitude is theoretically gender-neutral, in practice it amounts to noblemen and their vassals coming to Undrek to wantonly make use of its women. Merchants, sell-swords and adventurers of all stripes also make stops in at Undrek for much the same reasons, although they buy their carnal delights with coin rather than being entitled to them. Because of the unusual laws, many men consider it a dishonor to live in such a county, unwilling to accept that their wives might be swept up to serve as the playthings of someone else at a moment's notice (even if the actual odds are rather low) and leave at the first opportunity, so females make up roughly 60% of the ~8000 inhabitants. Countess Zoe has just ascended to the seat of power at the age of 20 after her mother turned 50 and abdicated. She is mischievous and greedy, but also far more naive than she realizes. In the chaos after King Bryce's passing Undrek suddenly seems very vulnerable, but she sees this as an ideal time to try and expand her hometown's influence, daydreaming of some masterstroke of diplomacy that will bring the crown to her. She has a coterie of unsavory friends - a witch, a necromantrix, and a sell-sword to name just a few - to help her make her grasp at power.
Sounds exciting! I'll be honest, I do think there needs to be more female leads to make sizable progress. Queen Mathilda, Queen Kaitlyn, and Duchess Irene haven't gone particularly far. So I'm excited to see where it goes!
@fyreant, it is your story idea, so I have no objections to it. It only makes me think of what kind of son Bryce could have, depending on which of the five maidens he marries.
Hmm - this is a good point and part of the reason I came here to discuss before posting. In fact, on further consideration, I might try my hand at expanding Mathilda's branch a little before I go adding anyone else. I'll do a couple chapters for her as an experiment sometime in the next few days.
Okay, back again, thanks for positive feedback though im far from done. I guess when it comes to a harem I find it isn't about how many woman, but how many unique kinds of woman such as different species, plus serves as a means to expand my characters options for partake for himself if he chooses. Anyway moving on. Chira (pronounced ky-rah), a centauride chieftess in a long line of leaders in her nomadic tribe who never stay in the same place for too long. They were forced to seek refuge in the desert to escape hunters and slavers only find it quite perilous then any other environment, it wasn't for thier honed hunting and survival skills, as well as thier ancient druid magic, they would not have made it as far as they did. The tribe came upon the home of a humble lord and inventor who mistook them for riders since he wasn't wearing his glasses at the time and welcomed him with open arms. While it was a bit awkward in the initial talks the tribe was intrigued when he introduced them his growing invention for safe travels for horses through the desert. He called it the Camel Cloak, as it primarily several cloaks and goggles for body and eyes over atop a special pumping mechanism strapped to subjects back which would keep the subject cool and hydrated. Outfitted, the subject would a appear less of a horse but more of a cloaked camel , hence the name. Chira asked if this cloaked could be configured to centaurs as well. As surprised at finding out who his guest really are, he was quite intrigued enough to try it out. So Mekael stuck a deal with them, after helping him fine tune the cloak for all thourabreds they would keep thier cloaks after they escort him to the royal palace so he can present his work to the Grand Sultan. The true be was a bit mixed with it all but Chira assured them that this device is just another tool to use for survival and a new tool may be required to suit a different environment. So after some trial and error Mekael perfected the camel cloak and the caravan made its way for the capital proving it's worth agaisnt sandstorms and bandits. Finally they made it, and Mekael met his friend from childhood, the young Grand Sultan Omari Al-Nanoon and presented his latest invention and introduce his new friends. The Omari and his Queen Ivira were intrigued both at the invention and thier unusual guest considering few centaurs are seen in the empire that are not slaves or gladiators. So The royal invited Chira and her tribe to stay awhile, Chira insisted that they be off but she decided that some knowledge of the land from the its most powerful rulers could be of great help. So over diner much was discussed the tribes many journeys and discoveries as well as the royals own sojourns and the unique magic they learned. Upon further discussion and some experimenting they learned that thier druid magic was very compatible with thier own and with it they could create oasis islands to serve as rest stops and checkpoints for travellers. Upon realizing what she and her tribe could do for this land more than any other, she decided to stay and help see this plan through. Soon enough the tribe fragmented, some continued thier journey beyond the dessert with the promise of returning one day others settled down on a private island oasis dubbed nomadic island granted to them by the Grand Sultan himself and kept secret to everyone but the most trusted. Others followed Chira to serve the land and its empire. Those not sharing/teaching magic and Knowledge of the larger wold at the Shaharazade academy, serve as several cavalry positions in the kingdom, from vanguard, to escort. Collective referd as Humpback cavalry as originally intended as a racial slur by naysayers and malcontents business the name stuck and the cavalry was soon joined by actual horse ridden and camel ridden cavalry in the same cloak that people can't tell from a distance. Chira took the lead role of handling traveling procedures and terraforming oasis in the empire as well as the humpback cavelry whenever she feel she is needed she grew so accustomed to living with the Royal family, she decided to make her own contribution to it if they were willing, they accepted. Thought it required a bit of innovative medicine and magic Chira did have children. Her first born, Fuanalis was a very active centaride even in her youth. When she became of age she signed up for the cavalry and soon became a rising star to the point where she replace her other as head of the cavalry, though she is alright with leading, She prefers work in the field and lead by example, and not order anyone what she wounldn't do. She is an increddible fighter, scout and caravan guard, though due to her more militaristic upbring she is less aware of the social norms of civilian and noble alike which g nds to put her in a bit of an awkward standing even among family.

So is it impossible for a guy to take over or just really difficult?
@fyreant Personally, I love your ideas for Undrek! The Countess and her supporting characters sound both intriguing and fun; as well, the law of "prostration" sounds particularly exciting to me. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with that. The only real concerns I have are more nitpicking in general. From the sounds of things I would suggest putting Undrek in the marshlands (it's still a part of the duchy, just not right on the mountain range). I'm not sure if this is where you originally wanted it, but you didn't specify and necromancy in particular seems more fitting in the swamps. Further, I would recommend it be somewhere east of Riverain but west of Hillgard (for continuity sake), perhaps on a road between the two. But fantastic idea!
Well, shoot; I was initially planning to shelve the Undrek idea but seeing some responses in this thread has got me all enthused about it again. I'll do an opening post for it as soon as I've caught up on a couple of my other pre-existing stories. @Omegah2o I think you're probably correct about the marshlands - I appreciate your help with continuity, as this is a story with pretty strong continuity overall and I'd rather not be the fly in the ointment. On a road between Riverain and Hillgard sounds ideal. I'm still catching up on all of your posts; I'll go ahead and read through the rest of them before I start. And for simplicity's sake maybe it would be better to start the story 'at the beginning' during King Bryce's reign and all that, as well? @Ultrasound7 The Mos Eisley/Tortuga comparison is very apt. And it is not at all impossible for a man to take over - in fact the inertia of the laws of the land would favor it, and the rulers of Undrek are always aware of just how possible it is. The only reason it hasn't happened already is because the men who tried to take over have gotten disgraced, assassinated or otherwise dealt with. It has been a constant struggle against being conquered or made to submit for the women chosen to rule, the defining conflict of their history.
Hi everyone I'm back after months of not doing anything I hope to get back on with writing. I was planning on having Bergelmir find his ancestry out from the "archives" but I don't know if that is what I want anymore if does not feel right, I was wondering what everyone would recommend for me to do? Spoiler: Story Ideas that may or may not happen, could be spoilers. So I thought maybe he would join the mercenary band and find out his mother was related to Edwin; maybe sister? Also I wanted to add an Island chain off the the east (west), The Whitecliff Isles, known like Dover in England for there white cliffs. It would be a duchy called the duchy of the Isles, and the islands would originally be for protecting the eastern (western) coast of the kingdom from raids for both the Northmen and the Amazons, however it has long been abandoned leaving the castle of Whitecliff from protecting the eastern (western) coast, hence the raids on the eastern (western) coast. There would be a tiny population of sheep herders and some farmers in a tiny village surrounding the ruined castle small enough that people ignore them for the most part. Maybe Bryce will want to set up the castle once again and sends Edwin and his Merc band to rebuild and garrison the castle from attack. What do people think?
A county would be more apt than an entire duchy. It doesn't really sound like it's going to have a large enough of a population to be a full fledged duchy. Perhaps claimed by The Goldfields or some as of yet unnamed duchy between Vismark or The Goldfields...which i think there's enough room for(need to really make a world map for this thing.) Then again, Perhaps it's such a small piece of land that it could just be considered a part of the Crownlands and none of the dukes or duchesses would really mind. I think I need to work on updating the writers resource page with all of the new stuff people are adding....
Welcome back @Actiaeon ! I'm certainly not opposed to the addition of the Whitecliff Isles, although I would recommend changing its position. It's true that there is no map to Itheria, but I'm under the impression that east boarders other nations by land (Phebis certainly and possibly others). Although, for some reason I recall @merkros once stating that Itheria is a peninsula; this could just be my mind playing tricks on me however, as I've gone back and can't seem to find where I might have once read this. In any case, off the west coast would probably be better I think, most likely in the north. Perhaps with the abandonment of the fort, the Goldfields became vulnerable to attack from the Gaelic tribes. Just a thought.
whoops, I missed that you mentioned off to the east @Actiaeon . I just assumed you meant west. Sorry about that. Yeah, like Omegah2o said, the land east borders other nations. Phebis is practically due east and Elileithel north of that. So having a small island chain off to the east is pretty impossible. You could have it off the coast to the west though...
@merkros and @Omegah2o Woops I meant west sorry, I was think at the time of typing it dont say east phebis is there and what not and I STILL PUT EAST, IDIOT and then did it throughout the post. edited in shame and so on. i'm thinking its so small just white cliffs and rocky shoals that maybe it should be a barony, no one has do that yet huh. Has anyone done anything with goblins? I was thinking of doing something with them and if someone wrote anything on them I would like to know besides the writers resource page and what little @Omegah2o has wrote of them in a battle, I was reading a book about the fore people and thought maybe that could work with it.
Ok I think we need a map I made one in paint real quick, it's bad so everyone can edit it so I can get an idea of what they need or thought of. After all that I will make the map better looking so you know it's not a crap heap. I know it's missing a lot i'm trying to get the ball rolling here. Or if you want submit a quick paint drawing of our own creation and that is great a well.
