Will stories still be "findable?" I had someone say they couldn't find Attaining Tenure on my profile anymore. I get the legal changes--but surely if someone is logged in they should be able to see my stories.
Sure hope this gets fixed soon. Literally had my account for only a few days, and now the site is busted. Hopefully, whatever legal issues are complicating things won't last.
Thank you for the clarification. I just logged in to the main site and all of the missing words, stories, and categories I had encountered are now intact. I would suggest that anyone still experiencing any of these issues log in (on the main site, not the forum, which counterintuitively seems to have a separate login).
First, thank you Friedman for the information. I kind of figured that's what was happening, but I wanted to make sure it was you doing it and not some goof from Y'all-Queda or the Texas Taliban. It's sad that we can't have a rational discussion about things like books (or in this case web content) any more. I personally don't like a few of the tags or categories that are now invisible - they're just not my thing ... BUT ... and I can't stress this enough .. they're JUST WORDS, people! If anyone reading this stuff thinks it applies in any way to the real world, they have significantly more problems than we can address in this format. For those folks, I have one bit of advice: If you don't like it, don't read it! Just leave the rest of us alone. .. but some people get all Moral Police on us and the next thing we know we will have limits on the number of tweets we can view in a day .. oh, wait!, wrong rant. Anyway, I certainly hope this is resolved without too much censorship. Again, thanks Friedman. Oh, and for the guy who asked why I haven't posted before: I never really found it necessary.
I view these changes, and the secrecy surrounding them, with hostility. Shoot me one of those DMs, Friedman, and we'll see if I have a future on this platform or not.
I am also disappointed that authors weren't told about the changes. At least let people know! I love CHYOA and don't want to see the site hurt in any legal way. But a heads up would be great.
Can I have one of the DMs explaning the situation, too? If this is as far as it goes I guess it could be worse but the way this happened makes me nervous. I'm going to go ahead and back up my stories just in case. There are hundreds of hours of work in the stories on this site.
This observation is not hugely important since nothing has actually been deleted so much as veiled, but I noticed that the chapter count on the front page has gone down to 780k, and I remember it was getting close to 1 million chapters the other day. It looks like whatever got caught in the net of purging involved something like 200,000 chapters.
I do maintain that abrupt changes need time to be adjusted too and information. While the reasons make sense it could still exacerbate the issues of maintaining usership if people aren’t provided a satisfying explanation and don’t know how to access any of the old content. It is simply impossible to directly speak to ever user individually to explain things so a notice on the main site while doesn’t need to go into detail about everything would still be generally useful.
People. Don't be stupid. It's obvious he can't talk about it yet. We have our answer: Legal requirement. CHYOA was more permissive then other sites and you are now finding out why other sites don't allow certain types of content. Stuff like r*pe / inc*st was and always will be on the border of law, and laws vary by jurisdiction. With online sites you often have to worry about laws of your residence, as well as server location, and location of company hosting. For example living in England and having site on US servers owned by OVH(French company), you'd need to fallow all 3 sets of laws. I'd prefer slight censorship over our dear leader ending up in jail. So chill and wait for situation to unfold.
You're too suspicious. There's tons of people who read stories and never interact with it or the community in any way whatsoever. But when they run into a problem, this is the place they'll go. And in fact, those people are more likely to encounter the problem, because... see below. I checked my own stories. When not logged in, my inc*st story is invisible on my profile and inaccessible by direct links. The other one is visible and accessible, though with certain strings (like "r*pe") snipped out. When logged in, both issues disappear and the site functions exactly the same as before. I really hope this is not the beginning of the end for the site.
Yeah, I might have jumped the gun too early. It just checked all the boxes of fabricated outrage for me. But I experienced some isues myself since, so yeah, there's definitely something going on here and a statement would be appreciated.
It seems to me that such a statement is intentionally not being made. Admitting my understanding's imperfection (thanks Doc Cochran), I'm not sure how viable that is as a long-term strategy. None of us know exactly what's going on, but I suspect that whatever person or agency caused or demanded these changes is not going to be pleased to discover deception, and an attempt at deception is the only reason I can think of to be coy about the exact changes being made, or about the reason why. Thus, my worries.
While I fully understand complying with processor requirements, it would be nice if some sort of Regex filter had been used so words like paint didn't get incorrectly removed. It also irks me that words used frequently in everyday conversation have been included for extremely fringe cases.
I just noticed you can't change your story's category anymore. It's locked to whatever category you picked on creation. I know we used to be able to change the category so this is more than just hiding certain categories.
Ok, now I can access stories I was reading, seems that someone made some changes giving me access, thank you whoever did that
