3 reasons why I’m not going to read your story

You can only have one category.
If your had to choose, put the category you think will be the main plot. If fucking your family is the main point of having mind control powers, then it's incest.
If fucking your family is incidental and not the main story arc, then call it MC

In a different world, the owner wouldn't set the category and users would just vote for which category they felt the story was in. But that would complicate the coding more than a bit.

This is the only method I've ever seen work for accurate tagging/categorization at scale. You can't depend on individual authors to know all the correct tags to use, but crowds are great at forming consensuses.

That and tag aliasing. One site I'm on has no fewer than 57 aliases for 'blowjob'.

    1. No unique hook. This is a collaborative site. There are approximately 500 Mind Control/Reality-bending/Free Use stories on this site.
Unless you can come up with a truly unique spin on the concept, just go and contribute to someone else's story.

    2. Photos/Gifs. I know this is a One Man's Bread is Another Man's Poison deal, but if I wanted to watch a sexy lady riding dong, I wouldn't
come to a text-based site. Do the work, describe your characters.

    3. No branches at all. That's just a single, linear story, dude. Take it to Literotica or AO3 or wherever.

    4. Explicitly stating a character's age/hight/bust size. "DD" means nothing to me. "Just turned 18 (swear on me nan Officer!)" sounds needlessly
paranoid. Again, describe. Character descriptions are your first chance to turn the reader on. Ain't nobody chubbing up from a Wiki page.

    5. No sex (yet). This is a porn site. If the reader can't conceivably nut, it just doesn't belong here. Publish once the first sex scene is written.

I realise that CHYOA is not set up for linear stories, but nonetheless there's a demand for it here. All my stories are linear and do reasonably well, many from other authors do superbly well. I'd love to take them elsewhere but there are just no decent options. Literotica is massively shit, the site desperately needs an overhaul and AO3 is only for fanfic. There are just no other realistic options that are a well designed user friendly site and cater for a range of categories. They just seem to be very poorly designed (or very old) sites or cater for certain niches.
This really annoys me too, it's just lazy writing.
I don't think there is such a thing as unique in story telling. It does annoy me though when EXACTLY the same stuff is regurgitated time and again. There are a millions ways to do it differently and freshen it up, but some people seem intent on just going over old ground. There's a good quote from Mark Twain on this subject:
“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.”

That's right, literotica has three or four styles, main page looks like from early 2000', user profile loading like cheap dvd menu, stories administration and editing is bugged and all pages still switching between logged/ unlogged or error.

Their forum is little cheaper version of chyoa forum.

    1,

I know what you mean. Don't get the reader hooked on one thing only to subvert it for something inferior. And don't advertise your story as one thing but make it about another.

2, When authors show characters displaying one set of behaviour and then telling the reader a completely different thing and expecting it to overrule. Show don't tell.

3, Mary Sues that the story ends and breaks favourably too.

Spelling, grammar and poor formatting are big ones for me. Poor English puts me off massively, makes me read things in a Borat voice. And a big wall of text just makes me groan internally.

I'm also gonna go against the grain and say I think gifs are good. If you can take a random porn scene and give it context to the reader, make it so there's a hot story that goes along with it - I think that's cool. I see it as kind of like a more elaborate version of porn captions I guess. Not gonna be everyone's cup of tea. That said I do think there needs to be buildup to it. And sufficient detail so the gif actually has impact.

Personal preference though. I'm a weirdo. I think pictures help break up the text and keep things interesting to look at. One of my favourite porn games of all time, Perverted Education, uses them masterfully.

These things never been checked by moderators, you can gangbanging whole african continent and no one care about you language, but if you meet a kid, you go to jail and your story is locked or declined.

I have to ask about this one because I don't think it's so easy. First, one has to find the right picture or should one just grab some random picture that says nothing about the story. Second, one has to watch out for copyright, especially if one isn't just grabbing some random picture that says nothing about the story.

What cover photo should I use for Ganymede University?
What cover photo should I use for The Erotic Adventures of Todd?
I just started a new one so what cover photo should I use for Gay Wrestling Championship?

...I remember the time when we couldn't even *have* cover photos. But the copyright is a real issue. Just grabbing a random porn photo (or worse, a personal picture of someone) is a bit iffy and I am ideologically opposed to AI "art." I may have taken this avatar pic from a random online search but using one for a story would require a bit more thought, in my opinion.

Obviously don’t just grab a random photo, I mean come on, that goes without saying. At least I thought it did. And if you can’t be bothered to put a cover pic up why should I be bothered to read it?
And copyright is never going to be an actual issue here on CHYOA for one main reason, we’re not monetising our work. If you take a pic that’s in the public domain and use it as a cover for a story here it is never in a million years going to be a copyright issue. If it there was even a hint that it would be a problem the site admin would not allow it.
I simply listed some stuff that stops me wanting to read a story. If it doesn’t bother you then good luck to you. Each to their own.

DO NOT BE LIKE THAT. I would love to add cover images to my stories. I would also love to find other pictures I can use for other reasons. I have even tried AI but found AI frustrating in the exact same way that I find grammarly frustrating. I don't want a program telling me what I want.

I'm not trying to justify not using cover images. I'm saying I think it would be a good idea if we had some help or some guides to help us find good, public domain images. For example, how do I find an image of "gay wrestling" that isn't created by a porn site which copyrights the image? I just tried a google search with safe search off and none of the pictures are "gay wrestling".

Places like gelbooro.com or rule34.xxx with strong tagging practices are my go-to.

Tags (which you can have multiples of) work better than strict categories, because often a story fits several of them. If I put a story into fantasy section, but it includes group sex, incest and mind control... Have I lied to the readers because I thought that "fantasy" out of all the categories was the *genre* and therefore the most relevant one? I know some people could get upset that the story has some kink that they do *not* want. Heck, if I make a fanfic of Harry Potter or whatever but put it in group sex category because the main focus is Draco having a harem, would that be better or will I upset people because "fanfics should all be in the fanfic category?"

We have story tags within categories and I still think that categories have a reason to exist, but either the readers need to check the tags (despite this possibly spoiling some elements) or *read the description* but discovering that a story may include many types of elements that are not necessarily in the category description is inevitable no matter how you set up the categories. Maybe do a search option to NOT give you stories that have specific tags that are on your "Nope" list?

Thank you. I don't have access to gelbooro.com. rule34.xxx has potential but it almost forces me to search for the most fetishistic image I can possibly look for. Like I can't find just an image of an innocent young man.

I did find some images to use. I'm not 100% sure of their copyrights. I think they're okay. Is there a way to check the copyright of an image I already downloaded?

Also, most of the images I found are not exactly what I was looking for but are just close enough. So I'm still hoping to find better images. Here are the thumbnails of what I found:

I was going to suggest something along the lines of a classic Greek wrestling match, they used to fight naked.
It’s best to presume it’s copyrighted unless told otherwise. But, as I said before, it’s very, very low risk if it’s a photo in the public domain and you’re not monetising it. if you’re worried DM Friedman for advice.

Monetization might be one component but without it, a violation isn't automatically ruled out.

If an image is "public domain," its copyright allows you to use it, is expired, or the image can't be subject to copyright.
So the few images that are public domain (e.g. cc0 license) generally won't cause a copyright issue. (Though such licenses might have restrictions like that you aren't allowed to use images with recognizable people in conjunction with pornography.)
