Hey dudes, I´ve got a question that´s been weighing on my mind. See, I adopted this story ( https://chyoa.com/story/The-Crystal-Globes-of-Princess-Varda.251 ) and I´ve been sort of rebuilding it. Now I´m having a blast with it and I´ve more or less got fun plans for it, but I´m worried that it´s ending up with too little sex off the bat. I wanted to make the story nice and deep (since thread depth is a big factor in people choosing to start a story), but I fear that people are going to lose patience if the sex is buried too deep inside the setup. As of now, the earliest chapter to have sexual content in it is Chapter 7... So how long do you guys keep going until you just give up for lack of patience? How big a deal is it if you don´t get something to turn you on until deeper in?
As a reader it depends what kind of mood I'm in. As an author I *always* have pacing concerns when a story isn't an explosive, raunchy, unending orgy. But I'll tell you, I've personally written notably longer, sexless or mostly sexless setups than what you have now, that have been successful (successful by my standards) once I've achieved sex. I don't think you are necessarily trying your reader's patience, and I think you'll feel better once you get some seriously sexy scenes in. The readers looking for a quick beat off will just skip ahead anyway. If you want an enjoyable set up then do it. You can't write for everyone. But if you make something decent then people *will* enjoy it, there *will* be an audience for it that will appreciate it. That's a promise.
First off: As a reader it really depends on the mood i am in but i can tell you one thing i have noticed. If i read a story to jerk off and it is good i will simply keep reading after i have done the deed. Therefore, yes, sexual content on a side with that advertises such is important but no i won't be disappointed if it is further back as long as the eventual pay off is worth the wait. I therefore suggest to put like tripple the work into the initial sex scenes because those are the ones people get hooked on. Myself i don't but I also do not write for the clicks. Second: As a writer on the other hand i write mostly narrative driven stories with sex in between, i have found that to be the thing that works best for me, and although i don't have the biggest following (The story I currently am working on - To Prove Superiority from Bastardlydastard - has like 20-40 regular viewers) I think that having sex scenes with characters you are actually engaged in has a lot more impact on your audience. I want to add though that this comes from somebody that despises writing in second person. The whole 'you' perspective is a can of worms i wouldn't even get close to. It also has a different impact on the whole psychological site.
I personally write with a full sexual encounter almost every chapter, but I think my plot suffers a bit because of that. Still, it seems to be working decently well for me.
Personally, I like to read a good amount story and to connect with the characters before the eventual sex. I even like to be teased with a few near-fucking moments to set the mood before the actual pay off. You'll probably get more readers with an instant fuckfest, and those stories also have their charm, but from my experience there are quite a lot of people around to appreciate a slower paced, character driven story too.
Thanks for the feedback! I guess I´ll just keep powering on until there´s enough sex on all branches. I s´pose I was a bit disheartened because I only got a fraction of the attention I got for my previous story. I guess what with all the great Fantasy-Quest stories on the site, it got kinda lost, while my first story had more of a unique hook...
I personally don't mind it. There is a factor to consider. If you want to write a story that includes sex but is not all about sex it might be hard to post it on a site for "normal" stories (won't someone think of the children!) so people that want to write such stories end up on sites that were created for erotica/porn. I think there always will be reader complaining about the low amount of sex. As a reader, like most others I enjoy both kinds of stories. Long developed ones with just enough sex to keep them exciting and short blow by blow sex filled ones. I think that if you write a good story you'll find readers (even if less numerous than on a regular smut piece) even if the sex is coming slowly.
