Hey guys. I had always thought I was fairly good at spelling and at least competent with grammar. I am also in the habit of looking up correct spelling if I am unsure as well as using an online thesaurus so I don't repetitively use the same adjective in a passage. I knew I made a few typos here and there, but in CHYOA at least I can go back and edit them out later. I was recently writing some longer pieces for posting on another site where there was no option to edit a chapter once posted, so I thought I'd run it through a spellchecker first. I was quite shocked that in an admittedly big chunk of writing, Grammarly flagged up nearly 150 errors. Spelling, punctuation, missing articles, etcetera. That was just the free version that checks basic mistakes. I was wondering what process of editing and proofreading other authors here use and which programs for spellchecking.
A text to speech reader is a really useful step. Hearing your text read back to you will often help spot slips you might otherwise overlook.
I believe that I have commented on some, but I know that BOTH mistakes & extreme length keep me from adding to a Chapter.
It has free features and paid features. The free is worth checking out and the paid features are worth paying for.
Yes, I have found it to be pretty good for the basic features with checking spelling, grammar, articles and prepositions. I have only been using the free version though. I do like that you can have it running and it flags misspelling and punctuation as you type.
I type in Word first, then dump it into grammarly after cuz I know id constantly be fixing things than focusing on writing lol.
I would do that, but I have tried, & can't find a program for my machine. I don't know that it runs as I type. Also, I don't know if it's worth the money, & I'm not paying unless I'm sure that I'll get my money's worth.
google docs is what i use but every machine has a text editor of some kind. just use that or google whats best for your setup. as for what its worth, figure it out. i think it is. not sure why you so ornery about it.
The first time I edited a chapter with Grammarly I was unaware that there were options in the settings for switching from the default American English to British English or even Canadian or Australian English. I was getting a little wound up at my spelling being corrected when I was 100% certain I had spelt them correctly.
