I'm wondering is there a way to Opt OUT of all the AI stuff I'm seeing pushed. I didn't have a problem with it when other stories that included it did so, that's fine, whatever I guess, but I'm seeing "Generate Unique chapter with AI" under my own chapters, or even stories. I can't stop someone from copy pasting my stuff into an AI bot I get that but having the option down there saying "Yes simply push this button to continue the author's work without them" just kinda killed my drive to update a story when I saw it.
Thank you so much for sharing how you feel about this—it really means a lot to me. This ad is part of a 10-day trial an advertiser is running, and I didn’t think it would come across as intrusive since only the latest chapter content is loaded in the user’s browser. But reading your message, I realize it’s a bigger deal than I initially thought, and I completely get where you’re coming from. You’re absolutely right—authors should have control over how their work is represented, and this ad could feel like it’s undermining that. Because of your feedback, I’m going to add an opt-out option for all authors. That way, if this doesn’t sit right with you, you’ll be able to disable this ad for your stories and chapters entirely. Thank you for letting me know—I really appreciate it.
Thank you for this. I was actually considering whether or not I should continue on this site when I first saw that button. It's very comforting to see the way you moderate/run this site with regards to author feedback. Please let us know when/where the opt out function will be.
No I had gone back to double check height on a character, because I'm dumb and don't have like a character sheet set up, I should really do that, and saw a "Create a New Chapter with AI" down at the bottom right around 'add new chapter'. I think it had the blue text like someone had written a new chapter and it threw me off but I checked more chapters and they all had it. I have my own hang ups with AI and I'm not happy with how the site is handling it myself but at the same time I realize I really can't stop it at this point. The only thing I can really do is just ask for maybe a little oversight or something or at the very least some psudo peace of mind. Sure the likely hood of someone going "Print me a story" on one of my works might be low but still...
On that note, I feel like this is something CHYOA should get ahead on. AI writing will before long go the same route as AI images, as in become very common place. I myself use AI generated images, so it would be rather hypocritical for me to say I'm opposed to this lol. But I do feel any AI writing should be clearly specified as such.
I’ve added new controls under General Settings (https://chyoa.com/settings) that let authors manage AI-related ads. You can now: Disable AI ads for all your stories. Disable AI ads for all your chapters, including those in other users’ stories. Let me know if there’s anything else you'd like to see improved. Thank you both for sharing your thoughts—I really appreciate the feedback. When it comes to AI, are you thinking specifically about labeling AI-generated chapters, or are there other areas where you feel the site isn’t handling AI correctly? I’d love to hear more so we can stay ahead of this and make improvements where needed. Your input really helps, so please let me know!
Personally I wouldn't mind a tag or something like that for people that want to avoid that stuff but at the same time I don't know how one would enforce that beyond just having the author label their stuff which is what they've done thus far (saying a story has AI images or not). The other idea I would have is maybe a hard limit to how many chapters/stories one can make at any one time as I could see someone just making chapters and story enmass updates just by spamming the advertised AI feature. Also personally I would say I'd rather see ads from something that would be more supportive of writing than 'doing the writing' but again that ship has long sense sailed(I brought up needing some sort of character sheet, some sort of managment program, even if it was AI, would be nicer for me than giving it the story and going 'you write' but that's me). The only other final bit is, you still have that get paid to write a story thread up above? I'm not sure how'd you double check but I could see someone just going down the list and using AI to just make a story submit it and asked to get paid. I don't know, personally my beef with it is people using it to be lazy or acting in bad faith to try and game the site for whatever reason they have but I don't know what sort of check and balance you could make here. Not like I'd expect the mods to run it through AI checker. I'll stay writing here for now but I'm not a fan of the whole push for AI stuff and I'm having to weigh what to do. Last thing I want is someone just going to my last chapter and hitting 'generate - Submit' 15 times. I don't mind that for like small one off things but for my own stories that are more world building and slow burns...., I dunno. Community has seem largely fine barring a few people so maybe we can at least keep this whole thing..., I don't want to say civ, but at least respectful to others.
I basically believe that once a story is created the author should have to clarify if it contains AI writing or not. Similarly if it is a public story the author should specify if contributing writers are allowed to add AI writing. From what few AI stories I have seen here, most authors already do that voluntarily. A particular concern I have is for the "recently updated" and "new story" tags. Nobody wants to see these get swarmed with just low effort AI, so eventually we might need either a separate AI category or a toggle to hide AI stories completely.
You can prevent people from doing that in your user settings: turn it off for stories you own and chapters you author if you don't want people doing it under any circumstances. Personally, I turned it off for stories I own. (This is a pretty new feature)
I'm not sure if it's because I'm a supporter & get ads removed, looking on mobile, or even AI doesn't want to look at my writing, but I'm not seeing this link which opens up a whole other discussion. If I'm not seeing the link and not seeing this forum, I don't know to disable this option if I don't want AI. I've never had anyone submit to a story, so it's a moot point for me, but I could see how someone could feel it's deceptive if it's hidden from me this is going on.
That’s a really good point—thank you for bringing it up! I’ve opted every backer at the hide ads level and above out of this by default. If you’d like to opt in again, you can do so on the settings page. Let me know if you have any other thoughts or concerns!
That or somehow make it display "This was generated with Advertised AI" though not sure how you'd set it up to do that. But yeah, I think you could make it have a tag or notification on the info section over on the side. The one that lists POV, Catagory, etc. Just have an 'AI usage - Yes/No/Some' or something. Again I can't stop it but I'd at least like for people to be upfront and honest about it and thus far the community here has done so, at least with AI images for their stories.
I did put something in suggestions for just this practically as soon as this topic came up. Although this topic is what pulled the trigger, i've been thinking the same thing for awhile.
I want to clarify exactly how this ad works to address any concerns. When a user clicks on the ad, a new browser window opens, and they are redirected to the advertiser's website. The advertiser then attempts to scrape the content from the chapter available in the URL to use as a starting point for their AI tool. Importantly, we’re not sending any data (like chapter content) to the advertiser—they rely on scraping from the open browser window. Once on the advertiser’s site, users can generate more content using their tools. However, any content generated there remains on their platform. At no point does this "next" chapter get posted back to CHYOA. I hope this clears up how the process works! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Lmao does this mean that the if statements don't get read by the scraping? If so then that'll go hilariously for game mode content.
I assume so, though I haven’t tested it myself. The scraping only sees what a non-logged-in user would see on the chapter page. If you’re using conditional content based on user interactions, it won’t get picked up.
Just put this out there, @Friedman, as a content creator, small or big, you put another advertiser of AI content in my content, you'll lose my support payments.
Thanks for giving us a way to disable this. It was jarring to see that there. Also, I tried it just for kicks and it just hangs on loading.
