One of my biggest issues with the search refining is that you can only narrow by what you want rather than by what you don't. Many times i'm not searching for a story in a particular genre, i can appreciate a lot of kinks but there are some things that do not appeal. I would much rather be able to filter out all the gay, transsexual, non english stories. Just because if that is the Category/POV/Language/etc on a story its probably ether something i cant read or something i'm not into. Being able to filter out those result rather than just selecting erotic couplings would be so much more useful. I like erotic couplings but i also like fantasy and science fiction and romance and lots of other categories. Same with POV gender. I tend to like Male POV stories but i dont mind ones that have both. I wish i could just exclude the female only POV rather than need to pick one or the other when filtering. I have a bunch more things i wished would be done with search but i think this seemingly simple fix would eliminate a bunch of tedious scrolling through results that are just not to individual taste when looking for something new.
I understand your dilemma, but be aware there's no such thing as "primary tags". If a 1000-chapter story has 1 chapter that is tagged "straight", the whole story is tagged as "straight", and there's no way to tell the difference between that story and one with 1000 chapters that are all tagged "straight". The site does rank search results in a sensible fashion, so if you search for "straight", you'll see the latter story before the first, but there's no way to say "give me stories that are more (or less) than 50% tagged as 'straight'". Discoverability is CHYOA's weakest aspect, imo, and the tag system is a big part of that.
Sorry that was a poor word choice. I should have said category? I guess rather than primary tag. These things. I can select one of them to view but it would really be much more useful, to me anyway, if I could also select everything I do not want to view.
The tag system absolutely needs a revamp too but to my non programmer mind that seems like a much bigger undertaking than just having an include/exclude system rather than just an include on the existing story filters. I'd love to have the ability to vote on tags or get some sort of standardized tag system.
