It is slavery in all but name, even if it is entered into consensually and regulated by contracts of servitude. For the elite, owning a harem of beautiful servants is a status symbol, and with the advances in genetic engineering, those selling themselves into servitude can be remodelled to their masters and mistresses' specifications.

...Even before getting to the end of Android's prompt, my first thought was that they would try to do some gender segregated university or military base or whatever and by next morning half the people have changed gender. "Oops, forgot about that." Also, do people change back and forth depending on their surroundings? And how quick is the process? If three guys walk into a room, does one of them randomly become a girl, or would they have to spend months together in a group with unbalanced gender distribution for the changes to happen? Obviously a slow process is more ...realistic? But if the changes are sudden enough that it can happen accidentally, it makes for some ideas for silly stories.
Hi, thanks for the interest. Other would-be authors might have different ideas for the prompt, but here is my take. People could change repeatedly based on who they were in proximity to. A young woman might change to a young man if their parents divorced and left the home with just a mother and daughter. Then they might switch back to a woman if they moved to college and their class or dorm was 60% guys, change back to male when they left college and shared an apartment with another couple of young women and so on, as circumstances and the balance of genders with which they spent most of their time altered. I was imagining the change taking a few days, rather than being instantaneous. Since it is the whole population that can change, most would simply accept the switch when it began to be noticed, as it would be considered normal. Others might be more attached to a particular gender and try to ensure they worked, lived or had a social group in situations where the balance meant they would remain their preferred gender.
