Really not a fan of the comments being moved at all. An option in settings to put them back would be greatly appreciated.

Seconded. I'm happy with this new option being the default, however I would prefer if there was a way to put the comments back on the sidebar.

To give a reason as to why side comments are preferred, readers can put in their thoughts while reading the chapter. This is often very useful when it comes to longer chapters and I think it leads to more detailed comments overall

I think making it an option would be the best way to handle this.

This is my primary reason for wanting to be able to change it back.

I'd like this as well. When writing more complex comments I like to go back and forth in the chapter and reread bits and pieces. Now I have to scroll back down to comments to add a sentence instead of going to sidebar after each bit. In addition to being slower I will lose my place in the chapter scrolling down.

I'm a big fan of the new, more prominent positioning of comments... but the above posts do make a valid point. Maybe a second 'add comment' form in the sidebar could be the best of both worlds?

I’d consider that an acceptable compromise.

Having the comments at the side meant you could just scroll down to view them, now you have to scroll, click, then scroll again. I'm unsure what the reason behind the change was, it's objectively worse now.
It also has the downside of being unable to alt-tab and just press End to scroll to the new chapter section to check for unpublished chapters when doing story maintenance, that's no longer possible since it defaults to the end of a comment chain and you have to scroll back up again to find the next chapter section.

In the sidebar, the width is quite limited, so you might have to scroll a lot to get through them.

In the sidebar, it might also lead to readers accidentally reading something from the comments that might be a spoiler.
