The EU seems to be working on age verification as well.
From what I read about it, it appears to be rather privacy-friendly.
You'd need to create a wallet and identify yourself to an organization once. (The organization has no further business in the whole process.)
Then, you can use the wallet to verify to a website that you are in a certain age range without disclosing your actual age, country, or anything else. (Your IP might still hint at your country of origin.)
The information the site gets should only be yes or no.
Registration for users seems to be completely free.
Transactions for the website are most likely free if the open-source solution is used. (The UK "solution" has transaction costs.)
Though there still seems to be an annual 3-digit fee the site has to cover.

    Can you elaborate on that?

Online Safety Act (2023), Part 5, clause 79:

    (3) "Regulated provider pornographic content”, in relation to an internet service, means provider pornographic content other than content within subsection (4) or (5).

(4)Content is within this subsection if it—

    (a)consists only of text, or

(b)consists only of text accompanied by—

(i)a GIF which is not itself pornographic content,

(ii)an emoji or other symbol, or

(iii)a combination of content mentioned in sub-paragraphs (i) and (ii).

So the reason chyoa is blocked despite being text is it's possible to embed pornographic images and gifs in the stories.

Funny thing is if you access the website from the UK then all story cover pics and profile pictures are blurred so I don't see why embedded images can't be as well. I maintain that it's absurd I can't view my own story lmao
