Story about a guy acquiring powers of others

I read this story her quite some time ago, more than a couple of years: Aliens gift humans with varying powers (and levels?) that manifest at some point in time (graduation?). People (students?) can be tested to determine whatever power they have. This guy was tested as a null(?), but eventually turns out he can acquire the power of others. Anyone remember this?
