I have a few issues with the change of behaviour of game state variables after the updates. In the old style, a variable didn’t exist until its value was changed\set in the story (and if you misspelt the variable name you got a new variable). So if you didn’t initialise the variable, you could have a situation where there were 2 paths, one conditioned variable > x, and the other conditioned variable < x+1, and you could be offered neither because the variable value was NULL. (This is a problem I kept tripping over) In the new style, variables are attached to the story with a default value. When picking conditions and variable changes you select the variable from a drop-down list. I must admit, I prefer the new style. But my story started in the old style, and when I added new variables, they get added in the new style. So when I restart a game, I get the new variables automatically, but not the old variables. The old variables are behaving the same way they did before. I also assume I’m still going to have to initialise the new variables, for those people who have bookmarks, because the new variables are not being added retrospectively. This confusion is compounded by the fact that I haven’t ticked show when creating the new variable, but they are appearing in the visible variable section. These variables are completely irrelevant until at least chapter 150, but they’re now sitting at the top, visible when I don’t want them to be. Also this is going to cause me a problem when I'm testing, because I have non-published shortcuts to allow me to get to a later section of the story in a known state, I just restart and use the shortcut. But now this process will have variables set which readers using bookmarks won't have. So I'm less likely to find problems before my readers do. Overall, well done, I like the way it’s going, it’s just the transition which is causing me problems.
Visibility of variables/game state changes confuses me too. I get how to designate some of them as being in inventory (or whatever you want to call it). The sidebar seems to show other variables as well but not all of them? How does it decide? Speaking of game state: has anyone else had issues with game state changes disappearing from chapters? Like I'll enter 10 game state changes, save & close, and then later I'll go back in and 2 are completely missing. The variables themselves haven't been affected, thank god. I don't know if it's just because my new fighting game [Coming Soon!] and a ton of variables & game state changes and I'm overloading the system?
