I can't figure out how to add variables that are not immersion variables

I read the guide and I'm still lost on this issue.
I can't figure out how to add boolean, numerical, or progress variables. There are no symbols in what i think is the score change table.
Is the score change table accessed by clicking "Score" in the sidebar?
Are variables changed through the score change table?
I cannot write my story without knowing how to do this.
I'm a GML programmer and i still can't figure this out. o_O Perhaps the guide could clarify this a bit more?

I know how to add stuff like names, stuff provided by immersion variables, but not the rest.

First, set your story to allow game mode. This is achieved by creating/editing a story and setting "Chapters can have conditions" to "true".
Then, when writing/editing a chapter, set "Changes to the score" to true (it's located between the end of the writing section and the publish/save as draft options). You can now add game variables.

Setting "Changes to the score" to true was what I needed. The checkbox is easy to overlook... my bad. Thank you!!
