I've been thinking of trying out what it would be like to be a GM for a game, even though I don't have much experience doing it. The details I have partially worked out in my head, but I kind of want to test the waters about it before I get too much invested in something to find out nobody is interested. The game is essentially along the lines of Game Monster or Memoirs of a Minion. Your character would start off working for your standard rule the world doomsday villain, though it doesn't necessarily need to stay that way depending on what a player chooses) The ideal goal would be to work your way up through the ranks(It might be an option for your character to evolve as well through promotions.) I'm not big on dice rolls so it would likely be more role play oriented. I don't feel like a lot of people have fun when they need to focus on min maxing every stat. You'd have your background experience, traits, and skills and those would likely determine what your successes are. If you want to be just a dickish human working for a world dominating thing, that's fine. If you're character is just a super badass goblin, then that's fine. A griffin-centaur type thing? Why not? But...if you're going to do something like "Immortal sealed titan whose omnipotent."....then reasonable limits would have to be enforced. In part, because it may actually be better for you if you don't start as all-powerful. A dark empire works on a hierarchy of whose strongest. If you have the power to freeze mountains, then the people above you likely could freeze planets. But suppose there was never a need for them to work as hard to train because they assumed nobody would pose a challenge.... In second part, because while I do frown on pvp kind of actions, I won't actually stop what a player chooses to do(That would be player and character segregation. The worst crime for these games.) Without dice rolls, it could get messy. If you have two reality warpers are going to go at it, it would devolve into "I hit you!" "Did not!" "Did so!" "Did not!" While it will be possible to start your game as say a squad captain, you're very unlikely to start as the grand inquisitor. Maybe you want to be a few notches in the ranking board before the game begins, but it's not necessarily for the better. Most likely your character has at least some status, or has accomplished something of note that makes them stand out. Or perhaps the point of your character is that the campaign is their chance to accomplish that. Up to you. But you also don't need to have a military rank and role necessarily. It might make moving up to the throne more difficult one day, but not impossible. Even a monster army needs things like medics, advisers, and engineers. So, if I haven't scared too many people away with my poorly thought out summary and they're still interested enough after reading, let me know what you think. I'm also open to someone with more experience, hijacking this from me if they feel like they could do better.
I'm liking the premise, (even I wanna play the bad guy sometimes,) and was wondering what all you've thought about for a setting so far?
My initial thought was along these lines but it is subject to change. The world in the main big bad(?) lives in, would be a place that only exists in dreams. So advanced technology and odd creatures are entirely feasible. Think like Disgeaea being mainly swords and arrows, but also bombs and machine guns aren't uncommon. But given that mostly everything that lives there is going to be pretty dam tough by default, you'd be hard pressed to be one shotting anything outside of standards mooks with bullets. The "real" world would be much like the standard high fantasy setting. While you can definitely take most things with you, it's much harder to take something that isn't even supposed to exist in that timeline or heavily magical in nature.(Doesn't mean you can't. But might end up costing you dumping other things.). If you do, those super cool weapons are definitely going to kick serious ass(It might be good to be packing at least one if you're in a bind.) But it would also be ill advised to get crazy with them, when this is a world without anywhere to maintain, reload them, or recharge their super magical abilities. The use comes for serious emergency cases. If you're out of ammo, then you're just going to end up stuck lugging a MG around until you can go back home to reload. Natural magic abilities that you posses yourself however don't have as many issues. Some might be watered down a little(Not necessarily by a lot) in the mortal plane, but you don't run the risk of having to give up anything to use them either. I'm not glued to this idea, so if anyone thinks they have better suggestions for a setting, I am open to it.
Alright. So, there's a handful of people interested. There's not really a limit to how many people can play at once(Earlier would be better though, so you aren't playing catch up. But if it's later, then you can probably start with some power boosts to balance a little.) so, I think at least getting to the character creation phase already will be fine. I'll get started on making an information thread so you can work up your character sheets and post them. There's no real hurry with them. Other people are welcome to tag in if they feel like it. The story I have in my head shouldn't change too much even with larger numbers. If numbers die down(Which happens. Not a big deal.), I will probably make a support role character(Not an invincible god avatar gm character. A support one.) to balance out the numbers. I'll assume that mostly everyone already has an idea of where they want to go with their characters as far as evolution power ups go, but if you don't want to invest the work, I can think of something too. Though you are more likely to know exactly what you want than I would. But I will get started on the info thread and you can worry about all those other things later.
