Linking threads between stories?

I didn't want to waste the time testing this. But are we able to "linkto" different stories?

I'd like to create a "fast forward" story to create a "how da fuck did that happen?"

This is something that has confused others. It's easy once you figure it out, but explaining it can be confusing. There isn't any button you can press at the moment to simply do it. You need a work-around, as follows:

Get the thread number of post A ("fast forward"). Get this by opening the thread and clicking comments. It'll say "What do you think about Fast Forward (<thread number>)?" Take note of the number in brackets, that the thread number and you need it for the next step.

In post B ("how da fuck did that happen?") click 'add a new thread'. In the body you type #LINKTO <thread number>. So if you saw "What do you think about Fast Forward (172365)" when you clicked comments, you would type #LINKTO 172365

Give the 'Answer' (thread title) and 'Question' whatever you want. I usually give it the same as what post A has.

If that isn't clear enough try reading this: https://chyoa.com/story/chyoo-guide

Oops, didn't see different stories. Thought it was different threads.

Linking several stories is not possible. You can put a link in the thread though.

Apart from that, would you (or others) suggest such a feature? If we do this, the thread needs a special indication to avoid confusion.

I imagine you could experiment with adding your destination URL into Markdown to link to another story.

Nah I wouldn't worry too much about adding it as a feature. If it is there its would be nice but I don't see the need for it. Most story would be abandoned before the need for it. Plus, I could see it being use to troll.

While having multiple starting points leading to potential cross-overs would be interesting, I wonder if it would become confusing given how stories are framed by ownership as well as voting and ratings. I've seen this done on an older collaborative story site, and it really worked well, but authors just owned their own specific threads. There were no owners, editors or approvals.

I'm wondering how such a feature would be used to troll in a way different from simply using the same story. Do you think some people might be fooled into thinking they're reading the same story, when really the thread is part of a different story? If each vote only applies to the story, there wouldn't be any rating leeching, but then the average rating system for a story is already kind of wonky when you have multiple authors participating who might not necessarily garner the same consistent votes.

I'd imagine each thread would belong to only one story. In that case, I could see people trying to link to their own stories, which would detract from the original story and lure readers into the new one. It may become difficult for readers to keep track of which story they'd be contributing to if they chose to write.

I like the idea if it is something both story authors agree on in advance. I think it would be a mistake to allow it consent at the thread level for random authors and not the story creators (unless explicitly allowed by them and extended to all authors on threads).

I personally vote no. I only see negative side effects. For the few times someone needs to link to another story, a normal link can be used. And it should be a necessity, not the norm (imo)
