I can't help but feel Charles, the "doctor", and the men in black supporting the project behind Alternatum have some sort of ulterior motive. They remind me of an SCP Foundation GOI looking to change the world for the better or worse. Do you believe there's an overarching goal for the experiment presented in Alternatum? If so, what do you think it is?
To my knowledge, the original author of that story and 'the choice' ran a free use tumblr until he randomly deleted it and disappeared one day years ago (he had actually mentioned sometimes feeling like doing as much on his tumblr). So whatever the original intention behind the overarching story, you'll likely never get an answer. The present owners/mods might have their own take on it however.
This sounds like something that would be very interesting for you, or another author, to explore in one of the branches (or a new branch). Which is, after all, one benefit of an interactive story such as this -- there can be one branch where there's a massive conspiracy spanning various alternate universes, and there can be a separate branch that's just some quick chapters about a world in which all women wear jester hats and are turned on by seeing telephone poles.
