Spoiler: original post https://chyoa.com/story/adventure Little RPG-game of mine that is currently abandoned. I may come back to it later or I may start another, less messy version of it. I want to get some feedback especially about quite complex character generation process, because I will change it should I restart the story\game[/original post] A place to discuss and ask questions about story\rpg-game hybrid located here - https://chyoa.com/story/adventure-of-a-slave/cover
From a reader's/player's point of view the character creation process doesn't seem all that complex: Choose race, gender and profession -> Choose six aspects -> All done Of course, we never got to the point where we could see the effect the different stats have during the story, so I tend to forget we even had stats such as Strength and Dexterity. The part of character generation I liked the most was choosing up to six aspects, as that allowed us to create some quite unusual or unique characters.
What about player's control over character's appearance? Do people need that or randomly generated+appearance aspects+interpreted by me is a good scheme?
That really depends on the reader/player and the particular character. For example: - if I imagine my character as a big-breasted lesbian sorceress I'd rather not waste one of my aspects just to make sure that she has big breasts (the fact that she's a lesbian can be made clear via her choices during her adventure, though letting you know ahead of time might also be a good idea) - if I imagine the same sorceress as having long black hair but you make her start with short blonde hair I can just make her dye her hair black and grow it longer (possibly via magic) while another person in the same situation might be annoyed by the "wrong" description - if I choose a character that is a big tough warrior guy covered in armor from head to toe I likely won't care about his appearance since most of the time people won't be able to see him at all I'd say it's up to you as the one in charge of the story to decide how much control over character appearance to give to the players. Both too little and too much can be bad. To use the sorceress from my example: not everyone will care if she has pubic hair or not, or how long her nails are, or if her hair is straight or curly. Especially since magic makes it possible to change a person's appearance (temporarily or permanently).
Honestly, the aspects also suffers from the same problem as appearances. Perhaps making a list of what isn't acceptable would help at least a little for the aspects. Professions, however, should be something you keep under your control. People can have many different ideas for stuff like 'Knight', 'Peasant', 'Amazon', etc. Listing both the professions and what they affect statwise (as well as gender in that case) might cause a few grumbles, but it is better than having someone ask to create something ridiculous like demon lord.
Created a new adventure fixing some problems of the last one. Hope I'll have enough time to pursue it Are there a way to change name of a topic in this forum engine?
There is: Right above the very first post in the thread in the upper right corner you can see Thread Tools (next to it should be Unwatch Thread, assuming that you're watching the thread). Click on Thread Tools, then click on Edit Title, and the rest should be easy. I'll check the new story when I have the time. EDIT: Decided to give it a try and posted a comment.
Wheee, we are off adventuring again! Looking forward to this. Can I just port my character from the last aborted adventure straight over to this one? I don't mind making a new one if I have to.
You can use the same aspects, but I will regenerate everything because system is different. I want to warn that I will pick one character and try to get it relatively far before trying different. And that is not first come, first serve. I plan to generate the first character and start a story during the next weekend.
