So, when I get a lurker who drops a ton of likes on my stories, I'm always conflicted. I appreciate the HELL out of it, but I want to grab them and shake why the story works out of them. So, when it happens, I tend to drop a "Thank You Note" Message these days. I find it doesn't always get a response, but it's a nice thing to do. Some folks don't want their sex life out there in public, so I send the message privately, and if they don't respond, I don't push the issue. What's everybody else's thoughts on the practice? And a little music to start off the discussion, If you prefer to discuss Cobra Kai or something... (Saaaay, now there's a Chyoa Idea...)
I request feedback/suggestions and such by readers in my intro chapters. I rarely message people directly. Mostly because my own experience with people messaging is unsolicited flirting or links to sketchy websites.
Well, I still waiting for ton likes of my chapters "laught". But when someone give me few likes I send him message with thanks, like you. Well, I'm tipe of reader who easly give likes, so it is normal for me to give them a lot. "Wispering:" I also have hope for more guys like me, to gareth more faves and likes "Wink"
This is a great topic. I've been doing this a lot, I'd say 9/10 do not reply. I basically tell them that they provide the inspiration to actually continue to write. I do get an occasional recommendation which I'd normally add unless it's whacked. I thought I was the only one who did this, good to hear others think the same.
Uhm... no comment on some ideas. Nothing against people wanting stories taken in different directions, but an ENTIRE rework of a premise to fulfill a fantasy is a bit too much.
I know this struggle. I am a like-whore and I love it when people like my chapters and especially leave comments. However, from my experience when I send a "liker" a note I usually get no response (which is fine) or sometimes I scared them off. Therefore, I now only reply to comments.
Yeah, same here. Still want to do it though, just... I get it. Folks aren't wild about other folks knowing they whack it to my writing.
I often send thanks messages to people who've liked a lot of my chapters, and got some good responses and banter as a result. I try to practice what I preach give feedback or leave comments myself. I do make a point of saying thanks when someone favorites and bookmarks but does not like, it can prompt them to like as well.
Personally, it depends on context. If someone comments in one of my chapters, I'll generally respond if it's positive. Sometimes (recently) if an author I like favorites me, I'll send a message thanking them and asking what prompted the favorite. Sometimes I'll reach out to an author with a private message if a chapter they wrote inspired an idea and I'll ask permission to use one of their characters or simply to clarify a 'setting rule/guideline'. Especially if the story is moderated. I don't want to hammer out a chapter and submit it if the author rejects it because it doesn't 'fit' in the story or if my writing might put them off/creep them out. As for likes in general, I always enjoy when someone enjoys the smut I put out. It reminds me there are kindred spirits out in the world. Personally I try an make a point to hit LIKE on any chapters I enjoy from others.
I agree. I try to leave comments when I read a story, which is rare, since I strangely enjoy writing more than reading fiction. I confess that drives me crazy (someone favoriting and/or bookmarking without liking), but that is my own personal hangup.
