Lesser known authors and stories, or work in genres you normally avoid

Hello! I have wanted to make this thread for while but never found the time, until now apparently. As a newbie author here, I have found this site to be an unusually friendly and inspirational place, and I’m constantly impressed by the quality of writing and the imagination on display.

There are so many very talented, popular and established writers I admire on this site, but this thread isn’t about them. One thing I’ve found the more I explore is how many lesser known (at least based on the likes/views I notice) but extremely impressive works there are on CHYOA. So, I wanted to make a place for people to talk up their favourite stories and/or authors who maybe aren’t as well known, or who you think should just be celebrated more than they are.

BDSM isn’t a genre I would normally click on, and I’m not 100% sure I remember why I tried QueerKestrel’s story “Secret Masochist”, but I am so glad I did. The thing that impressed me the most about QK’s work was the ability to put me in the head of a character completely unlike me who was undergoing an inner conflict and personal change beyond anything I could imagine, but did it so well I couldn’t get enough. In my favourite thread, the protagonist RC has to go see a prof she hates about her failing grade, and ends up in a psychosexual tutoring that makes her doubt some of the core beliefs she had about herself.

For me as a writer, this work made me re-evaluate how I write the inner struggle of my characters and how I can best demonstrate a narrator’s conflicted or changing mindset. That’s just good fucking writing IMO.


But instead of making this all about how much I like this one particular story, I’d love to hear what other people think. What authors do you think should get more shine? What perhaps less popular genres on CHYOA have exceptional work that should be more widely read? What other imaginative and well crafted stories are out there that I haven’t seen before that I should shamelessly crib find inspiration from?

 

Ironically i would have put you Wilparu but I'm not sure you count as either lesser known or lacking in likes! However, I know that incest is not everybody's cup of tea so for anyone who wants and easy going way in to that genre then I strongly suggest Wilparu's Story My daughters new boyfriend.

However, avoiding the author of thread then I'd go for Grey0six and her story Family Values....

It's well written in general but the story is fairly basic in terms of plot, it's not going to keep you guessing. However, what she does better than most authors I've read on CHYOA are the sex scenes. I know from both personal experience and reading the forums on here that writing detailed sex scenes are what a lot of authors find most difficult. Grey0six has the unique ability to write a whole bunch of meaty chapters covering one sex scene, even one part of a sex scene. There is one bit where she has several chapters on one oral sex scene, and it's not drawn out or over done. I'm in awe of her ability to do this when I often find myself gritting my teeth and trying to just get through my sex scenes. So, if like me you struggle with the detail of sex scenes and the repetitiveness of them then read Family values for some inspiration.

 

My recommendation for this is you Dansk, and I don't know if you'd count as lesser-known or not but I was worried we'd lost you from the site until you popped back up just recently.

I'm completely head of heels in love with your story An American Fox in London. Amazingly well written and a buildup between the brother and the sister that is absolutely to die for. I can't get enough of it and check back almost daily for updates just in case my bookmarking and favouriting has failed me. Can not recommend this one enough!

I tried Secret Masochist and while the quality of writing is clearly fantastic, it just isn't for me... lol

I'll check out the other stories posted in here. Also 100 percent agree that wilparu deserves a lot more love

 

Finished American Fox in London and Family Values. Enjoyed both of them. Any other recommendations?

 

I presume you’ve read Wilparu’s My Daughters New Boyfriend?
If not then that is a must.

Speaking of lesser known works, I upped my contribution to the ‘highlight’ level but someone generously highlighted the Valentines anthology before I could.

bottom line, any suggestions for a story that could benefit front the highlight for a month or so? A good story with lower than deserved views or likes would be ideal.

Kissing Cousins gets my vote.

 

Personally, I very much enjoy the writings of moonlight. Sadly, she does not regularly post chapters to her stories and hasn't really done much in the last couple of years.

 

I've not read Moonlights stuff so i may give it a try but not posting regularly, is a bit of a turn off.

 

I rather liked the one story I sampled, but having been inactive for so long isn't ideal for highlighting something. Thanks for sharing though!

 

I understand that the update schedule needs more oomph. I was just trying to point out some quality writing. She has been inactive as far as publishing chapters in recent memory. However, she does still seem to be active from visiting the site regularly(having been on only 13 hours ago as far as this post goes).

There's always a possibility that renewed interest in her writing may bring renewed interest in her...well...writing.

 

It's not everybody's cup of tea, but as far as fanfic goes Susan Storm's Secret Life has a degree of breadth and depth - especially if you like corruption fanfics - which makes for fun exploration, and even has a sequel.

 

Yeah that’s what I went with. Really well written and with some interesting branches... although daciasdesire isn’t exactly an unknown but still good pick!

 

Thank you so much for the kind words and highlighting! I'm beyond humbled. It still doesn't feel right to me when I get mentioned, I think I'm a middling writer at best. I have a huge case of imposter syndrome going on.
