Story elements you like writing/reading just as much as sexy parts

Hey guys, just thought I'd chat a bit since I'm new!

Do you have things in stories that make you just as excited for that story as the sexy parts do?

For me it's great dialogue and characterization. Getting in there and appreciating the characters, even if it's just a mook with a penis, makes me very happy. I go a bit too heavy with the dialogue, maybe, but I just love that stuff.

Bonus points if it's also funny dialogue! Or dramatic dialogue, even.

What do you guys like? Maybe something like meticulous formatting, or game elements? Maybe something like detailed settings or original lore?

I like transformations, just for the challenge. It ends up a great deal like sex scenes, in that you want the reader to be really invested in the transformation, and to be a full process to experience rather than a quick change-of-state.

Action scenes. They don't need a lick of erotica in them to keep the blood pumping.

I love character arcs and dramatic romance probably the most. Big moods and breathless true love shit after some hurdles and conflict is so exciting for me to write.

I also enjoy laying out a plot and then, halfway through writing it, suddenly thinking of a much more interesting twist that still makes perfect sense with everything that’s already happened.

True, also noting that a good action scene can really surprise you in an erotic work.

And I feel you big time wilparu. If you can make the characters feel like they really came through on something like an adventure or a series of obstacles, it makes a big difference toward how the ending feels.

I, too, am a twist addict!

Transformation is still pretty new to me, but there are all kinds of options to look at here on CHYOA, pretty popular genre. I do like seeing transformation in terms of, say, a character is radically different from the start and beginning of the story.

I am a big fan of action and characterization, but what really makes me appreciate a story is world building.

It doesn't have to all be in some giant info dump or anything, but little tid bits of information sprinkled throughout a story can really flesh out a setting and make it feel deeper.

I love writing a tête-à-tête. You can let yourself go with witty dialogue, and they are often great for exploring your characters and revealing things about their personalities.

I’m not sure how to count it...I actually prefer characters when they aren’t too easy or willing to jump on cock at first sight. Sometimes I find it can actually kill things if a character feels way too into things right from the get go. I don’t know how to explain it.

World building is important, something I need to work on. Like you said, having the characters or action show it bit by bit throughout the story is best.

Witty dialogue is my favorite part of any story, I think. That's just my personal preference. :)

And I get that for sure, Aura. I run out of gas a little too early some times and regret it when it happens. I definitely feel like if I make a lengthy or challenging arc of events then I'm happier once I get to the sexy parts.

I actually find writing a straight up sex scene usually quite tedious. The set up for the sex, however, is my favorite part. Someone on here once described it as the difference between writing about making a sandwich and eating a sandwich. The first part (making a sandwich) I could come up with dozens of different angles. Eating the sandwich, however, is a much more limited field.

I often find that build-ups flow from the heart, while actual sex scenes flow from the mind. So many synonyms...

I don't know what that means, though I am very intrigued.

For me writing is very much of the mind but then I associate creativity as being of the mind and not of the heart. The heart gives the passionate the mind gives the creation. The problem with a simple sex scene is that it seems so limiting. In the end, it is insert Part A into Part B and add gyrations.

I feel you one-hundred percent, porneia! Not just because I love sexual foreplay, but also because I love the characterization and the build-up.
And I think I get you, insertname... though I think for me, the build-up flows from the heart and the sex scene from the dick.

Dialogue. It feels like an easy way for characters to reveal themselves and their relationships to one another.

Dialogue can be a sideways way to give a character a "type" by having one character give an offhand description of another character, or a sense of both the describer and the one described.

I enjoy two things more than any other type of writing:

    (1) Humor. I love it when I think of something funny (at least in my own opinion) which comes naturally from the situation as opposed to a manufactured joke. An example of this is in my story It’s Good to Be the King, when the protagonist comes across a woman with very large bosoms, and he thinks about how she seems to be keeping something close to the chest - “but then again, it’s hard to think of anything in the Kingdom that isn’t close to her chest.” Maybe I’m not as funny as I think I am, but I do enjoy coming up with what I think is a humorous moment.

    (2) The building of tension. Whether it’s a lead-up to a sexual scene or something else that’s climactic, I like writing what comes before much more than the exciting event itself. Perhaps it’s because when writing the “big moment,” the pressure is on to make it pay off and leave the reader feeling like it was worth the wait.

Also well stated my brev! If you have any recommendations for fun game style stories , I'd love to hear them. But maybe in the recommendations thread. ;)
