Convo starter- What inspires your stories

Discussion in 'Authors' Hangout' started by TheStirringLion, Apr 30, 2020.

  1. I was reading a few random stories I found on the main site. Then I wondered "What inspired this?"
I expect some will say "Get's my rocks off." or something like that. But many of these stories are more than just a shallow fetish. What got you writing whatever you wrote?

My first story, which I hate now (it's shit), came about because I couldn't find any zombie stories that actually involved zombies; it was always two survivors shacking up, or a bunker harem; stuff like that.

...well there was one, which was actually superbly written, but it was horrifically graphic. Like, too graphic when it came to the zombies. So I wanted to make one that was a happy medium.

I'm a real day-dreamer, and I spend a lot of time in my own head. I'm often thinking up stories as I just sit around and sometimes I come up with something I just have to write, a single scene or concept I can turn into a narrative. Usually it then just grows out of that initial idea to a longer story. Can be messy because I'm not that good at planning and tend to come up with ideas on the fly which I then have to work in to the full story.

Otherwise I'm sometimes inspired by drawings I find online. If I really like one I'll come up with my own spin on what's happening, how the characters got into that situation.

I loved Douglas Adams' allegory for writing as flying...

You just have to keep throwing yourself at the ground, and eventually you'll miss. If you wonder too much about how you missed, you'll notice that you can't possibly be flying, and as a result... you will no longer be flying.

As far as sex scenes go... yes, I'll often have an incident or something that I'll have thought of in the past. However, that's where the old school GM comes into play, and I start thinking... Ok... so how do I make this so my Players would buy it?

I guess the whole reason I started writing here was the old fanfic reader's dilemma: it's hard to find a story that fits you just right, you know? Fanfic or not!

Anyway, I actually first found the site looking for smut of Palutena from Kid Icarus... I ended up writing some for a story I saw started here that had an empty branch for the character. I just thought, "You know who could fill this path out? Me!"

In conclusion, nowadays, I approach all my stories the same way... like, "If I wanna read X, well, I better start writing." Though the community has helped me find a lot of other stuff I wouldn't have thought to look for, too. ;)

Like others here, the inspiration for my stories stems from a combination of DnD and a desire to create the things I wish already existed - or, at least, write certain ideas exactly the way I want to see them. I have a policy to never publish a story without a plan to end the story, unless of course I'm contributing to a collaborative work. This means the majority of ideas I come up with end up locked away in text files forever, because I run out of ways to flesh them out. I guess you could say that I am very easily inspired by media, but I have the self-control to not merely post a handful of chapters, get bored and inevitably abandon the story.

Dedication to the context. It's sort of an ongoing challenge, juggling all the different branches, and it forces me to dig a little deeper sometimes. To try and keep things new and different, to take a story in a different direction (it's not all impregnation, I swear!) To try writing different kinks, different scenes. Sometimes to be better, sometimes just to follow through on a single idea until the end. Plenty of stories, comics, and manga provide inspiration for individual scenes, kinks, and characters.

Mine's a pretty weird one, but why not give it a share? Kind of long, though, so obviously no obligation to read if you don't really mind!

I'm actually asexual, which isn't what you think it means. Basically no-one does, including me until two years ago or so! Think of it like you live in a world where nobody needs food to survive, but people still get hungry. So, a lot of people "need" to eat to get rid of those feelings of hunger, right? Well, asexual people don't get hungry. That said, food still tastes nice! And our mouths still work, so we can eat the food if we wanna. Basically, the only change is the mental one that we just don't feel that hunger, but there aren't any physical changes -- everything still works, things still feel nice, so on and so on. We'd be cool marrying somebody who never ever wanted to have sex, but we'd also be cool with marrying somebody who wanted tons (assuming we loved 'em).

So! When I found out what it actually means, and went "oh shit that me, cool" (because I'd always thought it meant "can't fall in love", and that's not me!), it was really weird, because I'd always kinda thought that people were pretending when they talked about how much they wanted to have sex with celebrities they've never talked to and stuff like that. I thought it was like a front that one guy put up 2000 years ago and then everybody else had to as well. Imagine suddenly realising that the way your brain works isn't quite the way that most do -- it's pretty cool to think about, right? I think it is, because I think humans are super duper interesting in general.

So, long story, but the outcome was basically that I wanted to try to understand what it was like for most people. I figured the best way to do that was to see what sort of things those people wrote about in regards to it, right? So that got me reading this sort of stuff, and eventually I also wanted to make sure that the way I was understanding and interpreting them was right, so I gave writing a try. If people didn't act like what I was doing was weird, then I must've been interpreting the stuff right, which is cool because it means I understand what other people think like now. My favourite author I found on the site was Somburliss, whose stuff seriously bops and I super recommend -- I was reading it to try understand how people thought, but I ended up just reading it because it was really really good writing and characters and stuff. I've got a lot of nice things to say about her writing, but I'll cap it off there.

I also noticed that a lot of authors (definitely not all! In fact, probably a very small minority) seemed to be kind of angry or sad a bit. Some stories or chapter had stuff in them like "after the fucking dickhead outed you as bisexual, god you just want to kill him", or having chapters where a bully was just really violently and emotionally beat up as well. I think there might be a lot of people (a minority of the total people, but if it was 300/10,000 that's still a lot of people!) who kind of come to sites like this when they're in bed feeling sad and not able to sleep or stuff. So when it got to me trying my hand at writing stuff, as well as testing to see how well I understood the rest of the world, I also wanted to try make my story a super duper happy one, where nothing bad happened and everybody had fun. I figure if even over the period of a year, even if just two people clicked on it during one of those bad nights and ended up going to sleep smiling, then that was a really good thing! So now that I've got a sort of confirmation that I have at least a basic understanding of what I'm missing out on (but one that can always be fleshed out more!), that second goal is the reason I'm still going and the reason I'm gonna keep going for as long as I can. Plus, even people who aren't having bad nights seem to get a smile or some happiness/enjoyment out of it sometimes, and that's just as important as trying to make the less-happy people happy. Happy people should be kept happy too! If I can help out with that, then I'm totally gonna.

Oh, I'm so going to use this to try to explain what being asexual is about from no on. I was never really bothered, by my orientation - or lack there of - until it started bothering others (heterosexuals for the most part) who couldn't warp their head around the fact that I wasn't like them. A partner of mine once said it was like there was something broken inside of me. I didn't really push much stock in it though since I'm a very loving and affectionate person and am pretty much perpetually content. Meanwhile they were the ones that had some gritty obvious traumas (some old, some recent) and was suffering very badly from pent-up sexual frustration.

I started reading smut to masturbate to (it feels good after all) and because porn really put me off regardless of gender or theme (never even liked the mild scenes you find in movies). Then I started reading as a means of discovering new elements of sexuality. I've always found people interesting and part of reading and indulging in fiction is a way to learn more about them. I've never understood sexual attraction though.

While I've always liked writing creatively, just like Almax my initial venture into erotic stories was a kind of bid to understand, with a lot of emulation from what I'd read in other stories or heard other people describe.

After a while I got an image that popped into my head and turned into a 'what if', which I hadn't seen before. Like I got an image of my grandmother without her wig (she lost her hair because of trauma) and since then I've been exploring the concept of sexual scenarios with magical or imaginary creatures who have aged-generally considered unattractive features. All of a sudden I felt like there were a lot of inhibitions that let go and the creative flood gates began flowing.

When I write smut I'm not as attached to the characters either which makes taking them places a lot easier even if it leads to their death, perhaps because when I write smut or certain sexual scenarios it's a lot like writing CRACK (writing non-seriously for shits and giggles).

I find it very relaxing, and if other people enjoy it and and share their thoughts. That just makes a good thing better :)

I started one story based on a character I've written short stories about since high school. She's just a mishmash of daydreams and stories I've doodled over the years. Most of my writing here comes from reading a story, having something in it pop an idea into my head, and adding a few chapters.

I was toying with the idea of writing a CHYOA game, maybe one that is sorta like a harem story, but where the player chooses between light and dark paths for each woman.

I was particularly horny at work after edging for a week and suddenly the concept was an engrossing way to pass the time. Within a few days I had most of the characters and their key scenes in mind. Here I am a year into writing it and still going. (Sorry for the long wait between updates!)

My most successful story was inspired by a short scene in an old cheesy fantasy film where a wizard transforms his henchman into playboy model Barbie Benson so he can go into the hero's bedroom and stab him with a dagger. Created a setting a mixture of Conan, Scorpion King and Gor and had the hapless assassin go from one sexual escapade to another.

My main inspiration is for the most part really just "Fuck, that's hot"

I then try to branch out from "Fuck, that's hot" and create a narrative that should at least be somewhat engaging. If it's just "Fuck, thats hot" i tend to lose interest rather quickly.

Well, this is an easy one for me given I've only written one story here. I was inspired to write it because I wrote a quick one-off on someone else's story and folks there seemed to like it.

What inspired the one-off? Well, I read through a few of the stories there and the other characters there were girls with big breasts and they mostly seemed eager to do the casting. I thought 'Let's try something a bit different' and went with a character with smaller breasts and had mixed motivations for going through with it.

Hi, really curious about this and apologies if this sounds naive or insensitive, hopefully it's something you don't mind talking about.

How did you know you were asexual? What were your thoughts about sex and having sex beforehand? How can you tell if it's not some sort of repression because you don't feel comfortable with sex in real life?
