When to switch pronouns in a transformation story?

I'm not sure when to switch pronouns in a story about transformation and wanted some input from the other authors here. In the story I am writing, the protagonist, a dude, is transformed into a woman (how groundbreaking!). The story is written in 3rd person limited. The protagonist will experience some mental shifts later on that will make them view themselves as a woman and a Succubus, but I am debating whether to start referring to them as she / her immediately or wait until the mental changes happen.

My personal preference is to keep a charecters original pronouns until they start identifying as a new gender. Even if it can sometimes make things confusing

I think it depends on what you want to emphasize. In the initial scenes, I think it's best to use male pronouns with accompanying descriptions of his body. Shifting to quotation marks around the 'male' pronoun as he begins to start to enjoy the pleasures of his new female flesh. You can switch to quotations around 'female' pronouns for when the mc starts to explore and accept their sexuality, and female pronouns for when she accepts her gender.

I think it helps to distinguish sex from gender and identity from form. You can always keep it even simpler with male pronouns before he sees himself as a woman and female pronouns after she accepts being a woman. Just my two cents.
