Directions from a town I've never been near to a nearby state park along with all the rest stops along the way.
Searched for ways people have been successfully blackmailed in the past for story ideas.
How illegal human smuggling networks work on the southern US border and federal penalties for involvement.

 

For the most recent thing I've written on this site, I searched "what percentage of the world population is female." I know, boring, but probably won't get me on any FBI lists, unlike Greyrock and Kineticat.

For a plot line I was writing for another site, taking place in an alternate futuristic timeline, I spent quite a while on Google Earth finding the right beach in Oregon that a family would drive to for the day in their flying car -- and then I never actually got around to writing it, and now I can't remember what beach I came up with.

 

This led me to google if incest is in fact illegal in South Korea, where my story is set.

And it isn't. Shit.

I've been looking into how they would've dealt with broken legs and other injuries in medieval times.

 

Medieval diffidently.

I find myself digging for stuff on medieval fantasy sometimes. Such as when I had an idea for someone who was making faking coins out of iron and painting them with silver. I had to look up how they were made to try and figure out clues for the hero to track down the crook.

What wood would make the best bows?"
How much would a coin be worth?
How far is a league?
How were houses constructed?
Roman Aqueducts...etc,etc.

 

I am not sure if I have searched for anything that would worry the fbi but I have done weird or specific stuff. I just searched to see how long permanent markers would last and if they come off in the shower or if you have to use specific products to remove it. The story I am currently writing on gives you ownership of something with your name on it so while most people care about the fastest way to remove the markings I want the slowest way you can remove it.

I also have to do some research in the story I am writing in. Like what are the characters like so far and how dose this magic work. Not that I can't change how the magic works in a new branch but it helps to have it be the same as other branches.

 

Unlike a lot of concepts that are brought up in stories on this site... this is something you can actually experiment with fairly easily.

 

I have many times and in many situations... Had to look up the exact affect on the human body for various methods of death... Perhaps unsurprisingly... a lot of them were difficult to find proper answers for... I still don't know if the scene where a character is killed via forced Firehose drinking is technically accurate...

 

I used to write for an erotic video game called Female Agent, so I was researching how terrorist networks recruit, locations of known secret military bases, undercover CIA agent training and other list-worthy nonsense. Some guy even showed up in our discord claiming that he was tasked with reviewing the game for classified material. That was bullshit of course, but federal agencies do that sometimes IRL. The FBI outright admitted they investigated Tom Clancy over The Hunt for Red October.

Yeah, it is still in active development and I'm still frequently on its Discord channel. I just have not been contributing content for a while. It is shaping up quite well, the story finally made it to Bangkok!
