Ok, I just tried to link a thread and ended up losing over an hour worth of work. When I try to edit the chapter, it doesn't seem to be letting me re-write everything again. So what did I do wrong? I wrote the story, then clicked on link thread and typed in where I wanted to link. Then I hit publish and when it came up, all it will say is that it is linked, but not show any of my work.
I think you type the title / choice text, leave the chapter text and question blank, and link the thread -- meaning that this chapter stands in, as far as the story is concerned, for the one you're linking to. I don't know what Chyoa does with the chapter and question text -- does it remove it? You say, "when I try to edit the chapter, it doesn't seem to be letting me re-write everything again." You might have to create a new and different chapter in order to do the re-write, then add another chapter following that to do the link, and delete the attempted text + link. If you edit your current link chapter by following it from the "..."/"Edit Chapter" menu from your My Chapters page, are you able to recover the text?
I think, the current behavior isn't really intuitive. Maybe it would be better to have a second option below "Add a new chapter" which says "Add a chapter link" or sth. similar.
What happens is I write the chapter and then click the "Link" button. I type the chapter name I want to link to and then hit publish. The finished product is just a page that says "This page is linked to INSERTNAMEHERE" and none of my chapter text that I just wrote. I tried it about ten times or so last night and none of them worked. So what is the proper way to get this to work? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.
You have to go to an existing thread, where the answer should be a link to another existing thread. Click on "add a new thread". Don't write anything in the "Write the next chapter..."-field Click on Link chapter. Fill answer and chapter. Publish chapter. The linked chapter is always an "empty file" (Maybe you can get your text back by "unlinking" the chapter.)
See, I tried that and it doesn't look the same on my story as it does with others. When I try it, I always end up with a blank page that just has the message: This page is linked to EXAMPLE and you have to actually click the link to go to the next part. With other stories, the link is automatic and you go right to it without the blank page in between.
Try logging out / going to anonymous browsing mode and following the link. It should work automatically if you're not the owner/editor.
Alright, I'll try it. Maybe that is it, but it seemed really weird when I kept getting the blank page. EDIT: Tried your suggestion and it worked properly. Thanks for the help everyone. I guess since it was my own story it was showing me that blank page. Can someone run through it just to re-confirm it though? Here is the link to follow to the page that needed to get linked: https://chyoa.com/chapter/Mona-and-Gert.225054
Thanks for running the test for me. Now that I know it is working properly, I can start working on the other two sex scenes before moving the story forward. I was really worried about pushing forward too far if I couldn't get the linking right. This story focuses on Silvan, so I want all the monster girl stuff to eventually link right back into the main thread. Soooo yeah, that's why I was so frustrated with this. Thanks again everyone!
I am having trouble linking too. Two questions . . . 1) The old "#LINKTO (chapter #)" function no longer works? 2) I followed the instructions above, but it takes me to an additional page before going to the chapter I want. For example, at the end of my Red Sonja story (https://chyoa.com/chapter/Not-this-day-*.230460) I want to go back to the beginning of the story (https://chyoa.com/chapter/Story---"Red-Sonja,-Origins"-(Action-Adventure).227501). However, when I click on the created link it takes me to this chapter (https://chyoa.com/chapter/Start-again.230603). Can I skip this middle chapter? Thank you.
The forwarding is maybe invisible, if you are the owner or an editor. I just tried it and clicking on Start again forwarded me to the expected destination
Thank you! You are spot on. I logged out and went to the story and it worked as intended. Again, thank you for the knowledge.
Sorry for necroing this thread, but it was the closest to my own problem/doubt. So I just joined and though I've read the guide section, the whole linking part is quite unclear and unintuitive to me. When you're linking two chapters, should the both of them exist beforehand and then you link them? Or should I add the link to another page/thread first and then add more chapters there with the Add a new chapter option?
You have to create the chapter THAT IS BEING LINKED TO first, then only after that link the other chapters to it. Create the core chapter, then create any link chapters.
