What program do you use to save offline backups?

I'm trying to figure out how to save backups of chapters of my story, just in case, y'know? I read that CHYOA uses a RTE - a Rich Text Editor - for writing chapters, so I figured if I just used a program that could read Rich Text Format like WordPad built into Windows 10 then I could keep the formatting of the chapter's text, and even copy it back one-to-one if I needed to re-submit it for some reason. But it's proving troublesome since WordPad won't give me the option to Paste With Formatting in the Paste Special menu so none of the formatting is carrying over.

Has anyone here got a recommendation for an easily-accessible (read: free) program that will pick up the formatting of the text for easy saving? I found Google Docs will preserve the formatting, but I'd prefer an offline option if there's one out there.

If you write chapters with RTE, the content will later get converted into Markdown syntax.
(e.g. bold becomes **bold**, italics becomes _italics_)
The Markdown syntax will then get stored in CHYOA's database.

Markdown syntax contains all formatting information in text format.
Thus, the Markdown syntax could be stored in any text editor/word processor without losing the formatting information.

By default, RTE is activated on CHYOA. But you can deactivate the option "Use the rich text editor to create and edit chapters" on your Settings page. (Please do not switch that option while you have a chapter open.)
If the option is deactivated, you can open a chapter and will see the Markdown syntax.
So you could copy the content for backup.

It is also possible to write your chapters using Markdown syntax. If you prefer RTE, you can switch it back on.

If you need to restore a chapter, you can deactivate RTE again, copy your backup into the chapter, and save it.

This is the most basic way to do it.
As you use the exact same format as the CHYOA database, the restored content will be exactly the same.
