I would make sure to agree on sensible conditions and a payment plan that works for both sides, so nobody feels cheated for a mismatch in expectations. - Perhaps pay per chapter. You could then agree on some realistic minimum, as well as maximum word count per chapter. Perhaps then define how much a chapter has to be payed for, depending on word-count . Also makes it easy for both sides to terminate the arrangement in case it no longer works for one side. The worst that could happen for you, is that you do not like what the author is creating. You could terminate the commission. The worst that could happen for the author is, that you don't pay. He would have wasted time on only one or a few unpaid chapters. - Or you could pay a fixed amount in advance for some minimum story word count Would perhaps get you a whole story more quickly, because you don't have the effort of multiple payments Would increase the risk, that you do pay for something that you don't like at all Would increase the risk, that one side gets cheated. If you pay in advance, the author might not deliver. If payment is due afterwards, the author might not get to see any money.
