I'm sure many of you know about the popular series "game of thrones" (who hasn't at this point). But a few days ago, i was wondering how the story might differ if all the characters genders had been switched. As in; - Eddard stark would be a woman called Edda stark and be married to a man named Lynn Tully. Their eldest child is a daughter named Robba stark, their 2nd child is then a son named San stark, Arya Stark would be Arry stark, bran becomes Brenna Stark, Jon snow becomes Jenna snow. - Robert Baratheon is then a woman named Roberta Baratheon, married to Ceasar Lannister, their eldest child Joffa baratheon. - The mad king is now the mad queen, rheagar targaryen is now a woman rheaga and kidnapped a man named Lyann stark starting Roberta's rebellion, ... - Brienne of Tarth is now a man Brian of Tarth and gets mocked by most people in the army cause fighting is a womans job. The main reason i'd like to see something like this is to speculate on how much a characters personality and relationships could change from the original just by having a different gender. With the format on how chyoo works, it is also possible to select a time period: aegon the conqueror (now aega), Roberts rebellion (now Roberta), the war of the 5 kings (now war of the 5 queens) It also would permit writers the freedom to either follow the television series, the books, or even change the flow of the story altogether. If you didn't like the red wedding, then write it so it doesn't happen. If you didn't like Joffrey (now Joffa) dieing at the purple wedding, it can be rewritten that she lives. If you didn't like Ygritte dieing at the battle for castle black (now Ygr, unless someone comes up with a better name) then you can write it so he lives and Jenna snow gets to have a boyfriend. Obviously this would be a huge undertaking which i can't do by myself. Mostly cause i only saw the TV-series and never read the books. But if there are enough writers interested in heping out, i'm willing to start up the story (and obviously add a bunch of posts myself)
This subject once again brings up an anomaly. Obviously you cannot include erotic scenes with Joffa and yet Joffrey, an early teen (if that!), in the TV series has a vicious scene with 2 naked prostitutes. However I don't remember GOT get in trouble for his age in the scene, merely the violence used it. So they may show it in front of millions, but you can't write about it! In my recent story I have had to change the age of the characters in an adaptation of a novel by Jane Austen so as not to cross the bounds. If the explanation is that it is because such things are historical and would not be illegal in the setting then that seems a really odd distinction to make. Apart from that, I quite like the idea of rewriting GOT, although like you I haven't read the books, and I'll forgive you for the spoilers I accidentally read, but I am not sure why you would want to change the sex ... a bit like a mirror universe.
I was never intending to write erotic scenes like the one you bring up with underaged characters. I already suggested letting Joffrey survive the purple wedding so obviously it's not going to be a very faithful adaptation of the story. Personally I would simply change the characters ages so that they all ages 18 or older. Yes, i fully agree with you, we just can't rewrite that scene with the correct ages in place. As for the gender switches ... in this series we see the guys screwing a whole bunch of women, I thought it would be fun to see them get screwed for a change. Like Robert Baratheon, would he still be as lustful if he were a woman? How many pregnancy's would she go through? How would the male version of Cersei respond to being such a cuckold. Then again, this would make Joffa not be heir to the iron throne unless Roberta had a child at the same time and the babes got switched. I don't know about you but I like a bit of complexity in a story. To keep things from getting too complex however, i'd suggest changing the laws of inheritance so that only the oldestdaughter would inherrit a noble title, rather then the oldest son as is currently in the series. All of the spoilers i offered are shown in the TV-series. Though one of them is quite late in the series. If you didn't get that far into the series yet, then I appologise for spoiling. I'll try to contain future examples to the 1st season.
I wasn't anyway suggesting that you were write anything against the rules of the site, but you've got to admit it's that TV can get away with things that we cannot. The inheritance thing is an absolute given. You have a female "Imp" now and women of the watch like Jenna Snow now risk pregnancy from visiting male brothels. Arry Stark has to disguise himself as a girl. Daniel (Daenerys) has to become the father of the dragons and doesn't have to go through the trauma of pregnancy.
True, TV can get away with things we cannot. But we too can get away with things they cannot, like complete genderswitches, divergent storylines, or alternate paths in which Robba Stark conquers the iron throne, Tyria Lannister inherits the Lannister lands from Tywia. It's also possible for the writers of chyoo to tell their own version of the conquests of aegon the conqueror, the Andal invasion or the first war with the white walkers. The nightwatch already has to swear on oath of celibacy, so for the women of the watch it actually makes more sense for them to keep their oath. Or Daniel Targaryen married to Khaleesi Drogo after she survived the birth of their child and remain a happy couple, guiding the Dothraki horde to Westeros The only thing that might be troublesome would be Crasters keep though that's from the 2nd season I believe, so I won't be spoiling that. All in all, I think there's enough stuff to write about to make this a big story. All i really need are people who like this franchise just as much as me, enjoy indulging into this mirror universe and can come up with interesting ways to solve the problems brought up by the genderswitch. People who have seen the TV series, red the books, or can brek away from the original story and write something completely new yet still has that game of thrones feel.
