As the title suggets. I often have hard time coming up with nice elaborated insults when I'm writing stories with a modern setting. My reference vocabulary includes: -Asshole (rude/confidential for a person who's being mean/rude/bad behaving) -Idiot (general purpose for a person who shows little understanding of a given situation) -Moron(less used alternative to idiot) -Imbecile(quaint/pretentious) -bitch(female alternative to asshole, also has sexual connotation) -stupid(I percieve it as weak and disused) -dumbass(more colorful alternative to idiot???) -??? I maybe missing something at the moment, but that should be all. Edit. -whore(applayable to males, makes reference to the actual oldest profession in the world) -slut(refers more to the attitude and behaviour, to my understading) I was wondering if you could share the insults you uses the most often (with context maybe ) and also show some examples of more atriculated ones. Like 'fucking idiot', as I understand that 'fucking' is the first and foremost adjective used to give more emphasis.

Or pretending that they don't understand and demanding that you explain the joke. At that point, usually best to just declare victory and leave. )
Yeah, it'll vary setting by setting. If you want some more general ones you could try: Crap-for-brains Shit-for-brains Bastard Mongrel/cur (if they're the haughty type) I like the eccentric characters who will use weirder types of insults too like milkblood or pebblewit. You may be able to come up with some interesting spins if you do like... a far future or fantasy setting. Think your own spin on HP's mudblood!

For inspiration Keep in mind your character, though. Not everyone has the inclination or capacity to string 'em together like that : )

I am a huge fan of how Steve Martin, in the movie The Three Amigos, calls another character, “You son of a motherless goat!” What the hell does that even mean? It’s brilliant because it sounds dirty but there’s actually no individual word that’s objectionable. The best insults are the ones that are so dumb that they’re brilliant. Another good example is from Jamie Lee Curtis in A Fish Called Wanda: “Calling you Stupid would be an insult to stupid people!” Or, one which I heard myself once (not directed at me): “The first time you took a shit, your IQ dropped by half.”
