Thought: Modern day fantasy, guns and tanks alongside spellbooks and dragons. Shadowrun but less dystopian sci-fi, in a sense. Enter the main character, Generic McCoolname, one of the last modern day alchemists trying to put together the research notes of his tutor, after his death. Generic's goal? Make a Philospher's Stone and obtain wealth, fame and immortality.

The problem? Well for one thing Unicorn Horn and Dragon Ash don't get sold at the corner store, and the creatures that hold these ingredients aren't exactly huntable surrounded by cults of worshippers or powerful corporations and their private security firms.

Not sold on gender of the main character yet, because while my natural tendency is to write male leads, a female lead opens all sorts of perverse doors. As for fetishes and themes, aside from the obvious stick it to fantasy creatures, the natural progression of this sort of story would start out fairly mundane, some simple potions and transmutations to start, but I'm hardly subtle and by the time I'm done the list of nonsense will likely include body modifications and mind control or straight up making things (Homonculi anyone)?

This is mostly a bookmark for me to remember to do it, but I'm also interested in what you lot would think and any advice you have?

I generally like it when you get to pick the main character's gender, and I think that'd work for this one.

Also I just had an idea for the female lead making a rather perverse homonculus by accident (maybe her thoughts wander into the lewd side of things while making it) and she has to deal with a servant who spies on her while she changes and stuff.

I would say that I'm personally not into rape, so I'd generally prefer it not to go that route though. For instance, if she's captured by a large company that she tries to steal an ingredient from, rather than being raped, maybe have it so that she's released on the condition of making the boss a potion that, shall we say, increases stamina. She does, and he tries it to make sure it works before she can tell him that it makes it impossible to cum from masturbating, and has side effects if you don't cum for too long, so she has to take care of it. That's just my preference though.

Agreed with 229, on almost every point.

After some discussion and decision I'm going to structure it as more nuanced than just choose your own gender, but I'll actually leave room for multiple characters and thus multiple paths. For the current story I'm working on I'll be writing it from the perspective of a male main character and go from there with room for other characters that can explore other aspects of the world and the story.

I can understand not being interested in rape aspects and I have a policy of internally tagging my own stories with clear, defining themes in any place relevant, and if I decided to write a branch where a bunch of non-con elements are in play I'll be marking that. While it ruins the element of surprise I'm also very aware some content is simply not suitable for some people's sensibilities and tastes.

I've posted an initial chapter up and I'll get to writing here soon, my writing muse is currently being sat on by the inner nerd who wants to play FFXIV and Monster Hunter World.

I hate it when that happens!

This makes me think of the Atelier games, which is great. Namely the one that comes to mind is Atelier Annie:

"Once upon a time, there was a lazy girl. She hated work and usually just sat around the house all day. All she wanted to do was "Marry up" and nothing else."

Basically in the game, the island she gets sent to by her parents is having an alchemy contest and the prize is that the winner will be married to the prince or princess.

I'm sure there's a whole thing to work with that itself, but my thoughts to your angle:

Is it dead set, that the main character starts as a human? I can see why you would, but I also see a whole angle about a character whose unique to the area they live in. Instead of wanting to be like the humans, they want to make the humans more like them. Dunno. You already have your own thoughts on what you want to do, so....

Still, related to what you want to do? I could see this whole thing about the character getting funding by someone to make potions, that will make them fertile or give them the potency to impregnate girls in the city, because the common members of their species aren't around. Or just because they enjoy it.

Naturally, science demands thorough research. Meaning that field testing is necessary. For science.
