I think it'd be handy to know if you've been given the author or editor role for a story. Ideally, that'd be something the story owner discussed with you, but this isn't always the case. I'm just thinking a simple notification like "Owner_Name has made you an author of Story_Title."
Either would work for me. My suggestion is more about notification, but require confirmation also means you get a notification. My concern with confirmation is that it would need a bit more redesign for the website; I can't think of a way of adding it without creating a new menu item.
