I'm thinking of creating a story for self-insert themes. Basically, it would be about protagonist – the reader, inserting himself/herself into a story/anime/movie/game/etc. He/she could posses one of the existing characters f.e. Sasuke in Naruto or Palpatine in Star Wars and mess with the story. Or he/she could insert herself/himself raw – become a part of the story by entering it in their original form or by an avatar of their choosing. The author could also make slight changes to the story, making it better work with chyoa – characters more acceptable to the sex or change the male-female population ratio, etc. What do you think?
I've got a bit of a problem with the concept (understanding it, not being against it) The two solutions you expose are looking to me like just fanfiction. The first is the classic," you are this character have some fun " kind of story. The second unless each writer write someone that is exactly him or her self, is just adding a character in a setting. It's also a classic in fan fiction. So how is this theme just not standard fanfiction with a nice marketing buzzword. Juse for laugh, the first time I saw self insert story on the recently updated I thought it was about people literally fucking themselves. A bit must be lost in translation I guess.
Hah! That was a nice mistake. In the first case - the protagonist would enter the world as herself and know everything about the world. She could act based on that knowledge to try and change the story... Kill or save certain characters, troll villains, and heroes, etc. As for the second case, it's basically the same as the first, but with a boost from the avatar's skills, she would be possessing... So, the difference between this and standard fanfiction would be the protagonist's/avatars ability to screw with a story... whether it's with small changes or entirely flipping the board and destroying the plot.
I Didn't get that from the first impression. It sure could be fun to have some 4th wall breaking stories.
I would be in for this. Step 1: Enter world as powerful character. Step 2: Completely change history into what I want it to be. Step 3: Fuck. Step 4: Goto 3.

I'd say have some fun, have the person fail at changing the big world because they are a horndog or something.
Personally in these kind of stories I like to copy table-top RPG's t0 avoid the MarySue issue and you add a little of a random element to it.
I have dropped the idea because I found that someone already created something similar - Normality-Self insert universe It's close enough to my idea, so no reason to double it.
