1) When reading a story do you prefer that a single story arc/branch gets updated first (ex: Chapter 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1, etc.) OR do you prefer that each new chapter first gets multiple options (ex. Chapter 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, etc.) 2) When writing does your answer change? (Do you prefer to write a single story arc first OR focus on making sure each new chapter gets at least two choices?) This question has always vexed me. When writing, focusing on choices seems to be better in the long run for the story. However, I think readers prefer to follow a single on going frequently updated story arc. (I know I posted this question before but I wanted to add a poll.)
Gotta say I'm very much in the "Write it till it's done... UNLESS something shiny grabs your attention" school of thought. However, most times that something shiny turns into a plot point later, so... I guess it's more a matter of I'm still writing the story... I just forgot this part which I really need to put in here or else the rest of it won't make a heck of a lot of sense. And just because I like adding fun music to a topic.
I think it depends on the 'why' and your style of writing. Multiple small chapters and options/arc's are great for game play and will get more likes just down to the sheer level of chapters that are published. It works very well in fantasy and fan fiction. But if you prefer writing longer chapters in a more traditional story style then I think the single arc works better. Given the nature of CHYOA though I try to add occasional options here and there but the main thing holding me back is my lack of knowledge. I get a headache just thing about how to link chapters and put all the necessary code (or whatever that mystical black magic is). Plus, there's all the chasing the plot around a note pad making sure I've not messed up anywhere in all the intertwined options. I think ultimately we write what we enjoy reading and vice versa so do what you enjoy the most and keep your fingers crossed. It's worked for me!
