Tags are pretty much whatever the writer and reader can think up. For example I saw one author who had increased his odds of a reader finding his story by adding the tags mom, mommy, momma, mother...etc. Their are probably hundreds of tags if not thousands but no real organization to it.
You've advocated this repeatedly, but short of abolishing tags altogether how can it be organized other than having a few dozen common fetish terms which don't cover nearly as diverse content as exists on this site? -1
Afraid you have me confused with someone else on this one, but I am getting old. Lit has a pretty good system for this. You can search a tag and see other tags commonly used with it. So you can combine tags to narrow your search.
I would prefer it if they were organized better so that they were actually more useful for people who use tags. The site already tracks the tags that have been listed within the chapter's of any particular story. I'd like it if the number of times a tag was used in a story was counted and put as a number beside the tag under a story's tag list, then sorted the tags from most used to least used. My biggest beef with tags right now has always been the fact that people who don't like "Gay" or "Lesbian" or something else will ignore stories that have that tag, because they don't know whether it's the main focus of the story or not. So basically what I'd like to see would be if a story had 10 chapters tagged "Gay", 5 Chapters tagged "Lesbian" and 1 chapter tagged "Interracial. It would show it like this Tags Gay(10), Lesbian(5), Interracial(1) Then perhaps take it a step farther. If you click on the tag, it'll take you to the search function as usual so you can search for other stories with that tag. However, if you click on the number, then it'll take you to the search function that shows only the chapters tagged in that particular story. That way, people can find whatever chapters that have that tag and go to it/avoid it.
If you delete a page do the tags still apply or are they removed with the page? If they are deleted the author may forget that he deleted them and add a chapter with the same themes but think they already have a tag for it in the story. On the other side if they are not deleted they will give a false tag to the reader who could read the entire story and not find the thing that brought them to the story. If a writer changes his mind and wants to delete a tag then they have to comb through their pages for the desired tag. What if they where limited to the first page of the story or entered when creating the story. A writer would know where to look if they wanted to make changes to the Tags if they make changes to the story instead of rummaging around like they lost their keys. Also like to see a limit to the number of tags but I will put a tag on that for now. : P
I think there is nothing wrong with multiple chapters using the same tag. That way, only story owners would be able to add tags.
A Way to more easily harmonize the tag would be to use the same thing as when typing a name in the message section. You type a few letters and pick one in the list that appears under it. That ways people will choose existing tags and only add new ones if they don't find one that fits. It would reduce the number of different tags for the same thing. OF course it won't solve the stories already posted both the ones with tags and the thousands without. BUT short of the singularity, a genie lamp, or a few millions to pay Chinese 10ct/hour to tag them correctly I don't see a proper solution for that.
I thought about a list but that wouldn't do anything about current tags as you pointed out. Such as if you look up blowjob. You have tags for Blow Job, Blow Jobs, Blowjob, Blowjobs, Cock sucking, dick sucking, and fellatio, just to name a few I can think of. The only thing I could think of at this point is have a dedicated search by tag page where there is a set list of tags that can be searched. It give us at least a guide to what tags we should be using instead of just firing from the hip and making it up as we go along.

So if only one story thread has the tag of "Pregnant" then you should be able to highlight that or jump straight to it. It would make tags far more useful since a lot of stories cover a wide range of fetishes or tags. What if their was a limit to tags per chapter. Maybe one or two but have them displayed with the answer for the question in the previous chapter such as. Who do you go talk to? The girl on the balcony. (Lesbian) The couple by the bar. (Swingers) Tall dark and handsome by the fireplace. (Erotic Coupling) It give the reader a heads up such as if they didn't like swingers they take the other two paths so they where not ambushed by something they dislike and move on to another story. A reader could also find the tags they where looking for if they want to jump ahead in the story map since it would be in the titles of the chapters. Of course not sure if this is even possible or not but it make tags a little more useful.
That can be kind of an unwanted spoiler. I would rather like predefined tags and "kinks I don't want to read", showing a warning if one of the next chapters is tagged that way.
Well I have looked at it from several angles and as far as I can tell there is no easy way to organize the tags because of the sheer number and variety of them and the search function doesn't have a way to really search for them specifically. For example if you type in cum swap you get 316 stories. If you type in cum+swap you get 40 stories but neither narrow it down specifically so you can get stories tag with cum and body swap or gender swap so any tag with a space in it is going to give you false results in a search. I looked at searching by tags as well but that just gives you a very small selection. If you search only by tags with cum swap you get five stories. For any kind of list to work properly the tags would have to be a single word. Such as Blowjob instead of Blow Job so a large number of the current tags used by writers would be useless.
predefined tags could reduce the number of different tags. Duplicates could probably be eliminated. search for tags could be useful Searching the whole story text can easily fail on some fetishes. A story about "wife swap" could even exist without mentioning both words. Same with "bondage", "BDSM" and so on.

You have a limited list of tags. While some here argue that it wouldn't do justice for those that are not available yet. I would argue that you can always add if the genre and subgenre is not there for those tags. Lit has a great example of organization. Has anyone ever looked at stories.xnxx.com or other erotic story sites for examples. Yes Chyoa is unique in that you can have your story go different directions does it have to be different with tags compared to other sites?
My goal is to make them more useful so I focused on the most popular. A few do not yet have stories but might given time. I dislike lits tags because there is no real organization which is the problem we have currently. Writers and readers are not only not on the same page but different books because each reader will have an Idea of what their list of tags or as well as each writer will add what ever seems good at the time. The only good thing about lits system is that you can click a tag and it shows you tags you can pair with it to narrow down your search though you have to go about it the hard way to do it. XNXX system is okay but they have far less then I listed and you can't cross genre with with theme which we can do with tag. I am sure I can add more but I have over 300 listed so its a good start in my book but its just the start.
