Sorry if this asked before but how do you have an image inserted into a story?

So I’ve recently joined the site and I’ve been doing my best to try and come to terms with how the syntax works but I’ve hit a snag that I can’t work out what I’m doing wrong and the guide isn’t clear enough at least for myself.
As I understand to insert a picture into a chapter you need to use square brackets around what you want to call the image followed by regular bracket around the image Link you want to show in the chapter however when I do this it creates a link rather than show the image.

I’m hoping that if it’s not too much trouble if someone can further breakdown how inserting images work for me please? Also anything about the image properties and how or where I should upload images as I wish the illustrate parts of the story content.

I am terribly sorry if this has been asked a million times but I’ve just not had any luck finding a more comprehensive breakdown to the ins and outs of this on the forums that isn’t just linking back to the guide since for me I sometimes find I need like a very clear easy to follow step by step guide as stuff sometimes doesn’t click like it does for other people.

I’ve tried this but I seem to get a box with the word I used inside with no image of the picture and I’ve tried both types of links I get from the site one being the image link the other being the full site url of the image
The site I’m using currently is DeviantArt as I’m just testing to try and get the format right but is it possible that how images are stored on there causes it to not work?

also I should add I am using an iPad so maybe something is not supported with the device?

 

Ok so I worked it out and I’m now very confused at how this works since from the way it was explained in the guide it seemed you needed to use syntax to insert an image however I copied and pasted an image into the chapter like one would do on a word document and it remained when I saved
I have a lot of questions and one would be is this due to using a mobile device?

Not all sites allow linking directly to images. If you find using the image url results in a broken link you may need to try a different host. Also Chyoa doesn't support some of the newer image formats which can result in a broken link too.

Just for reference do you know what are the image formats best to use or recommended sites to upload images too?

 

I use a NSFW bloggger blog for images personally and jpg and gif formats.

You should definitely avoid drag and drop of images into chapters. You might be able to save the chapter but depending on the browser's processing, viewing that chapter will then result in an error.

CHYOA supports all image formats that go into IMG tags.

The problem is that IMG tags don't support video formats.

It is also important to use the image link that actually shows/loads the image and nothing else.

 

This may be pedantic, but:

That's not quite correct. You need an exclamation mark before it.

CHYOA uses the []() format to link things from another site. The ! symbol tells CHYOA that you want an image instead of a link. In other words:

Link:
[Link text](URL)

Image:

If you're forgetting the ! symbol, then this:

is exactly what will happen.

Of course, that assumes you're using an actual image URL that's a supported format, but I don't recall DeviantArt using any strange image formats. You may want to post the URL you're trying to use.

If you put some text between the brackets
the browser should show "alternative text" when the link is broken.

Note: alternative text can cause problems if RTE is activated

 

GIFs work the same way.

It is important that you use the direct link to the picture.
On many sites, you have to dig somewhat to get there.

(If you have a specific link, I can take a look at why it doesn't work.)

 

Well, it doesn't work as the site doesn't allow hotlinking.

So you can only see it because you have opened the direct link before. (I guess testing it with a different browser should show you the error)

 

This is currently not possible.

 

Sometimes it's possible to get the url for a thumbnail instead of a full sized picture. To do it, you right click and copy the image location of the thumbnail itself. For example https://forum.chyoa.com/data/avatars/m/98/98157.jpg?1594666594 is my picture's thumbnail and https://forum.chyoa.com/data/avatars/l/98/98157.jpg?1594666594 is a slightly bigger version.

Instead of opening a new thread I'll ask here as this thread is not old, and my question is related.

I too have some issues with getting links to images from certain sites to work, unless I upload them to imgur, and then link to there. Then it works like a charm.

But I would love to be able to link directly, without having to use imgur as just seem to be more work.

So did some testing and exploration, and found this story chapter:

Looks to me like the author could link this picture to the story, without use image hosting like imgur, am I right?

My problem is this doesn't work for me, and all I get is this:

However, if I use this gif, linked directly from the source, it work perfectly, and the gif shows in the chapter:

I'm confused... can anybody explain why the jpg doesn't work for me, when it appears to work for another author? Or am I doing something wrong?

If you have RTE activated, leave the brackets empty.
So
should work.

In
RTE will escape the underscores "_", so they become "\_". This will break the link. (I have no idea why RTE does that.)

The other user has left the brackets empty. Alternatively, you could also deactivate RTE and use Markdown exclusively for formatting your chapters.
