Hey there. I was writing something and i came up with a problem that bugs me form time to time. When you write a sex scene do you usually make it fit only one chapter or you tend more to split it up, maybe to add some choices, or to have different outcomes? Or maybe simply to not publish a chapter too long to read. I ask because sometimes i feel almost bad for breaking the tension and build up with a choice. On the other hand sometimes, putting a choice could give the reader a better immersion. What do you think?
I voted for multiple breaks, but I don't like to have several ones, just one or two. It's good for potential contributors or even yourself to take the sex scene a different way; more loving or rougher, for example. Or to allow for other characters to join in, maybe. It's good to leave the possibilities open.
I agree with Duskford. Each format has it's benefits, but for a choose your own adventure story multiple breaks are, generally, better. A single scene, start to finish, is good for something like literotica; it can work here if the scene is short, but for more immersive action I would suggest multiple breaks. That said, you have to be careful not to overdo it; having a break every time you change positions seems a bit excessive to me. Generally, one thread for the foreplay, one for the 'action', and one for the climax & aftermath is a solid format that's good in most situations. At least, that's what I prefer. Ultimately it is up to the author though, and as a writer you should do it however it feels right.
I typically only have one break to make for separate outcomes. However, what I do do is when the reader has the power to decide things like position and whatnot, there will be multiple chapters for it. I may not write them, because I prefer to progress with the story(although I should go back and write some variants when I'm having a hard time progressing), but they are open for other writers to add their own variant to the story. So, for example: Beginning of encounter - Sex(Missionary)- climax - continuation I do have a lot of single, or two chapter scenes too with no choice of position if something happens where the position is already decided either by the partner, or the reader just isn't in a position to decide. One thing I like to emphasize in my story branches is that you(the reader) are only in control of one character(the main character). The other characters in the story act and react depending on your choices, but you don't have any direct control over them outside of what your avatar might have. So if another character decides to tie you down, bend over for you, or whatever. That's the character's decision, not yours. You might have a choice to go along with it depending on the circumstances. With that said, I also write primarily in the second person perspective. That method seems to work fairly well in that perspective. I haven't really played it out so much from the third person, because I've only dabbled slightly.
Depends on the situation. I don't mind either extreme as long as the individual posts aren't too short. If the sex scene has a lot of things happening and the writer feels that there should be a break to allow for different options that is perfectly fine, that is in fact the reason why I break up sex scenes, I feel that there is a choice to be made.
I usually split up my scenes, even if there are no options. My chapters are already pretty long as is, so I don´t want to make them even longer... I do try to only publish a scene once at least one "path" is complete (i.e. there´s a cumshot), so as not to leave people with blue balls.
I usually try to end my chapters on cliff hangers so for the most part I don't split up my sex scenes over multiple parts. Not that I have anything against it if it's done well. It's just not my style of writing.
I think it really depends on the overall style of the story. If story is nothing but sex with few things in between then long chapters with no options to branch out are rather annoying. If story is meant to have a complex storyline branching to several very similar types of sex is annoying and tend to create a lot of dead ends
Over time I have come to have a preferred length for my chapters. Not so much based on word length, but simply writing a full page in notepad which I use. Once I reach the bottom of the page without having to scroll I'll at most write a line or two extra if necessary to reach an arbitrary decision point. So to answer your question for myself it all depends on where I am in a sex scene once I reach my stopping point. If I feel it can be wrapped up in a couple of lines I will do that, otherwise I will continue the scene into the next chapter with the decision being to change sexual position or something similar.
In my story T.L.C. i actually broke up a sex scene by having Jory sing to Lori before continuing.breaking up the sex scene is like real life to me,how many times have you been at it only for someone (Usually Kids)to want something or the dog suddenly decides it needs a walking
This. I feel that sometimes exploring other options has the downside to leave too many dead ends. Moreso i think that too many options trivialize the scenes, making them all the same.
Usually I have oral sex in the middle of a story and end/climax with full on sex. Personally I see the entire story as foreplay to the sex scene at the end. So one chapter might have someone propose/hint at sex and the subsequent chapter will be that entire sex scene. The chapter after is usually part of the falling action of the story. In the case with Ye Olde Ren Faire I planned the dead ends to be when the protagonist didn't please his woman fully before cumming. The actual endings were when they both came at the same time.
I think many if not all my sex scenes have breaks with the ability to go anywhere from just starting off to getting down, although most of mine are forced sex scenes so it allows me to have my victim run away or accept or in many cases just get destroyed by a cock in as many ways as I can.
