Really just anything to replace the top chapters. While top chapters sounds like a good idea you have one story taken up most of the spots and the number one spot hasn't been updated in months and is just sitting there collecting dust and likes for doing absolutely nothing while many authors are turning out pages daily for a few meager hours at most on the front page. All this does is get the stories more and more noticed and more and more likes so no other author can possibly get into these spots. I am sure Apex Seed probably is a great story but he has way to much promotion on the front page with seven links to the story he is of course going to have a bunch of likes. Most of us who have been around awhile have people who Favorited our stories or are following us but the new writer don't have that kind of following. Another possibility would be have the stories of the week saved onto the front page in place of the chapters so readers can see what the story was the week before and the week before that. Something to introduce the readers to new stories instead of just the "We have these torn out pages of stories over here that are really good. Come back next week and they will still be there waiting on you."
As much as I agree with you in general I feel compelled to disagree on your attack of my chapter, sitting there in #1. Yes, I know the story hasn't been updated for a while. But I still think that it is a very nice chapter and I am very happy for the entry point it provides into my story, which despite having been pushed down from the story top 10 ranking also still is quite popular and although being in a bit of hibernation still has quite a lot of chapters and progress to offer. So, all in all, in my case, I believe that the ranking does exactly what it's supposed to do: Making people aware of a story they might otherwise not find. My first suggestion would be to limit the number of chapters in the top10 ranking to one per story. And then, secondly, maybe introducing a ranking with "most new likes last week" or something along those lines to promote new stories.
@Rico: I'd like to point out, that i submitted a few suggestions regarding story of the week and top chapters, that might adress some of your concerns without going as far as to remove the top chapters completely. @Javalar: My first link is similar to your suggestion, to limit the numbers of chapters per story. http://forum.chyoa.com/threads/top-...r-with-the-same-author-story-combination.856/ http://forum.chyoa.com/threads/top-...d-create-page-for-top-50-or-100-chapters.857/ http://forum.chyoa.com/threads/impr...-the-week-feature-by-creating-a-new-page.859/
Actually, what would also be helpful would be an easier search for new readers. At the moment, most new readers will never realize that it's actually possible to just search "all stories" for "most views" or "best rated". I just played around with the search options, and it's true that we have a tremendous amount of stories, some of which are almost forgotten, because they don't appear in the rankings at the moment.
Wasn't attacking your story. I was attacking the whole system which I think is flawed. I don't think any story should be rated on a single page of good writing.
No, a story shouldn't be rated on one single chapter, but at the same time, there might be brilliant chapters within stories of 100+ or 1000+ chapters which might be worth reading although you don't want to read the whole story. At the same time, a chapter from inside a story might be able to give you a much better idea about the tone, the setting and the topic than the introduction page, so yes, I don think that single chapters are a nice way of ranking. I find it personally quite interesting which of my chapters within a story gather more likes than others.
