The basic premise is this: There's an enormous island continent known as Yu-Shan, where the gods live. In many respects gods are just like humans: only they live about a thousand times as long as we do and have incredible powers we can hardly understand... However, they still have jobs, still have to eat, still fall asleep, and so on. More importantly, though, they can get drunk. Jagielka is a "carter": the people who ferry packages to and from various parts of Yu-Shan and from the realm of the gods down to the worlds where their worshipers live. Like many "Carters" she's a pretty heavy drinker. She lives in an apartment building which has four eateries on the ground floor, one of which is a pub called Riley's. the day the story starts she's coming home for a nice quiet drink only to discover that Riley's has been invaded by a bunch of has-been celebrity gods of alcohol and their cronies. They challenge her to a drinking contest. She drinks three Valkyries, five Nymphs, and four Satyrs under the table before Dionysus says: "OK, you can hold your liquor! Let's see if you can deal with one of these!" And hands her a bottle of his PERSONAL stash of brandy... She CHUGS IT, then, slurring her speech slightly, says "Hey, tha wash dezent, got anover?" At this point, all the invading gods clear the fuck out: because that was the stuff Dynoisus uses when he wants to make ZEUS pass out, and it's barely gotten Jagielka tipsy. She, realizing she's already had one too many, orders a big bottle of Aqua Pura and heads upstairs to bed. Problem is, even with her tolerance, she still just chugged an entire fifth of class 12 Brandy, when she's a class 3 goddess... So when she wakes up the next day: she's still drunk... All manner of chaos ensues...
