As of a few months ago 11% of the stories on this site has only ONE chapter. Why is that? There are various reasons I'm sure, but one is authors chasing that coveted and hard to get 30 stories published trophy. To counteract this I propose that stories adopted as a Co-Owner count towards your totals for that trophy.
So if some writes a chapter then abandons it then someone else picks it up through adoption and writes a chapter. Then that person who has adobted or wrote 30 stories typing only a chapter or two they can get a trophy. Perhaps there should be a minimal how many chapters 1 or both write. Thoughts?
You make a valid point. I propose to gain the full "adopted" status they must expand it beyond the next chapter threshold, so if it had only one chapter they must bring it over five, then ten, then twenty-five, then fifty: which encourages the adoption of small, neglected stories in preference to those that already have a decent depth.
That makes things quite complicated and on the other hand, if someone really wants that trophy, he would rather start 30 stories with some kind of collection story introduction
Hey, I'm not saying it should be easyer to adopt stories to get the badge, just that there should BE a badge reward of some sort for doing it.
didn't disagree... just wanted to say, that counting the number of stories where a user is story owner would be good enough. Calculating how much chapters they added to an adopted story would be quite complex. And with the simple calculation, it wouldn't be easier than now to get the trophy.
A separate trophy for adopting stories is a great idea As for the 30 story trophy perhaps you should make steps for it where some one has 10, 30, 50, 100 stories as an example
There are a lot of 1 chapter stories which are simply bad and well left alone. There's often a reason these were not expanded, it seems to me. Isn't it much more fun for all sides if people actually really work together on stories the initiator is enthusiastic about?
Problem is what is to keep the adopter from just spamming out chapters instead of putting in the work.
Don't know about the REST of you, but I think my additions to the "Wishing For A Furry Girlfriend" story show what can happen if a fresh author comes in and cleans up with some of the "simply bad and well left alone" content...
I am not saying that there are not some exceptions, and of course, great writers can turn even a bad or mediocre first chapter into something awesome. My point that I am not exactly sure why investing time, effort and skill into continuing a One-chapter-story should have more value for CHYOA than investing time, effort and skill into a new story or another existing story. After all, it's just one chapter.
Because it means that there's fewer one-chapter stories floating around. Even if they never turn up on the front page, they annoy anyone who likes clicking "Random" and seeing if they can find new stories. And it's possible that they have quite a good concept, in which case, why remake the wheel?
Three R's Recycle, Re-purpose, and Reuse that is the purpose of adopting and reviving old stories. An author of the past might have an awesome story, but has since left and a new author looks at it and says I can do more for it. One Story Chapters could have a second chance if the right author picks it up and take over no matter how lousy or awesome it once was and expand it to 2 - 200 chapters.
