I just adopted a story. I have writing all day (at work so I can't post) but I really have a idea of where I want to take the story. It however changes some of the other chapters that has been written (I.e. on this line of the story someone doesnt like something that does like soemthing in another chapter) I feel like it is fair game after not being touched for 17years?

Or do I just start a new one from scratch?

I say go ahead, there's no particular need to maintain strict continuity between different threads in a story unless you plan to link them together at some point.

Even in the same thread it shouldn't be too hard to fix it. Something along the lines of "despite his earlier objections John grudgingly admited he was willing to give it a try" would be enough in most cases.

I guess you mean changing chapter which has been written by other authors.

I think the most important thing is not to betray the vision of the original author. (E.g. if you adopt an interracial-themed story and replace every occurrence of the word "black" with "white")
I think it's fine if you need to make small changes to the previous chapters to make your continuation consistent or the existing storyline more relatable.

I am not messing with the original idea of the story. I just see the MC very differently than some of the chapter that was submitted by someone else. I am going to change the attitude of her in another chapter but a lot of will remain untouched. Not a big deal just want to keep the story flowing.
